Hornets Pull Away From Phoenix

(CHAMBERSBURG, Pa.) – Wilson battled Lynchburg close in the first half and were tied after a quarter, but the Hornets used a large run in the second and third frames to down the Phoenix.

The Basics

Score: Wilson 38, Lynchburg 70

Venue: Gannett Memorial Field House

Records: Wilson 1-2, 0-0 UE; Lynchburg 1-3, 0-0 ODAC

How It Happened
  • Out of the gate Wilson set a strong tone as Jewels Torres (Jr., York, Pa. / West York) opened the contest with an old-fashioned three-point play after she was fouled on a layup. While the Hornets answered with a 13-5 run, the Phoenix stayed close as Mackenzie Caldwell-Degnon (So., Rockville, Md. / Richard Montgomery) scored seven-straight points for the Blue and White to close the first quarter with both teams tied at 16-all.
  • Lynchburg opened the second like Wilson did the first before Caldwell-Degnon added another layup after a Lae Black (Jr., Laurel, Md. / Meade) steal. Another deuce by Adrianna Stricek (Jr., Harrisburg, Pa. / Trinity) midway through the frame made the score 25-23, but the Hornets ended the half on a 9-0 run to lead 34-23 at the break.
  • After Stricek added a pair of bunnies to open the second half, Lynchburg took control by going on an 18-1 run over the final 8:14 to pull ahead. Wilson improved in the fourth, but were still outscored by a balanced Hornets squad.
Inside The Numbers
  • Stricek kept her double-double streak intact with 14 points and 16 rebounds. Going back to last season, it now stands at seven games.
  • Caldwell-Degnon had her best game of the young season with nine points. She was 4-of-8 overall from the field with a 3-pointer.
  • The Hornets were led by three players in double digits. Audra Petty led all scorers with 16 points off the bench. She was 6-for-10 overall and 4-for-7 from range.
