Phoenix Stung By Hornets

(WINCHESTER, Va.) – The Wilson women's basketball team's week against ODAC teams continued as the Phoenix headed down I-81 to take on Shenandoah on Friday evening. Unfortunately for them, the Hornets were buzzing all night and shot exceptionally well to hand the Blue and White the defeat.

The Basics

Score: Wilson 39, Shenandoah 102

Venue: Wilkins Athletics & Events Center

Records: Wilson 1-3, 0-0 UE; Shenandoah 2-2, 0-0 ODAC

How It Happened
  • Teams exchanged buckets to open the game before the Hornets used a stifling defense to make things difficult for the Phoenix offense. It benefitted Shenandoah on the opposite side as the hosts used a 16-2 run in the middle of the first to take control. Adrianna Stricek (Jr., Harrisburg, Pa. / Trinity), Leah Laubach (FY, Marietta, Pa. / Lancaster Catholic), and Jewels Torres (Jr., York, Pa. / West York) all added buckets to generate some momentum, and Laubach later added a layup with an and-one free through to help the Phoenix trail by single digits at the end of the frame.
  • Shenandoah remained hot to start the second and didn't miss a shot of any kind until nearly four minutes into the period. By that time the Hornets extended their lead to 38-16. The momentum force carried through the rest of the contest with Shenandoah building upon its lead the rest of the way.
Inside The Numbers
  • Laubach led the Wilson offense with 10 points. Half of them were from the free throw line and she added a 3-poitner as well. Defensively she was strong with four rebounds and three steals.
  • Lae Black (Jr., Laurel, Md. / Meade) pitched in eight points and was 50% from the field.
  • The Hornets had their best shooting night in the modern era and shot 61.9%. They were led by Terese Greene who scored 18 points and was 7-of-9 from the field.
Up Next
Wilson heads a little bit further down I-81 and will take on Eastern Mennonite in Harrisonburg on Saturday. Tip-off with the Royals is set for 1 p.m.
