Game Recap: Women's Volleyball | | By Logan Smith

Despite Loss To Keystone, Season Continues for Volleyball

(CHAMBERSBURG, Pa.) – It was a good news bad news day for the Wilson women's volleyball team as it hosted Keystone in the regular season finale on Saturday afternoon. The bad news was the Phoenix were defeated by the Giants on Senior Day which meant they would have to watch the conference scoreboard to see if the season was over or not.

The good news was outside results fell in their favor and the Blue and White will return to the postseason.

The Basics

Scores: Wilson 0, Keystone 3 (25-14, 27-25, 25-13)

Venue: Gannett Memorial Field House

Records: Wilson 4-21, 3-7 UE; Keystone 19-6, 7-3 UE

How It Happened
  • Wilson got off to a great start with four of the first five points thanks to a kill and an ace from Abby Moreland (So., Sabilliasville, Md. / Catoctin). Although the Giants tied it at 4-all, the Phoenix led as late as 9-8 after an ace by Amelia Edens (Sr., Pasadena, Md. / Glen Burnie). The Giants proceeded to gain control, however, with a 5-0 run. That extended to 17-5 as they took the opening set.
  • The Blue and White bounced back with a strong 6-0 start in the second with three Moreland aces in the rally. A block by Edens later put them up 9-3 before Keystone responded with a 9-0 run to gain the lead. The Giants pushed it to 17-11 before Wilson mounted a furious comeback and tied the game at 18-all after a kill from Deah Menedis (Sr., Reisterstown, Md. / Franklin). The Phoenix later put themselves in a position to win as a 5-1 run capped by another Menedis attack made the score 23-21. Keystone answered with the next three, and although Wilson staved away the match point the next two times, the Giants eventually closed out the frame to go up 2-0.
  • Things looked good to start the third as Wilson scored the opening three with a Moreland kill, an Allyson Garcelon (Jr., Shrewsbury, Pa. / Susquehannock) kill, and a block by the aforementioned duo. An 8-0 push by the Giants flipped the script and left the Phoenix to play catch-up the rest of the way. They nearly did it as a Giants error made it 9-8, but it was as close as Wilson could get the rest of the way.
Inside The Numbers
  • Menedis led the attack with seven kills on the day.
  • Moreland finished with six kill and balanced her line with 11 digs and seven aces.
  • Garcelon and Edens both had two blocks on the day.
