Women's Volleyball Season Ends In First Round At Cairn

(LANGHORNE, Pa.) – The season came to a close for the Wilson women's volleyball team as it fell to Cairn in the first round of the United East Championship on Wednesday evening. The No. 12 Phoenix were battling the No. 5 Highlanders for the second time this season, but the hosts once again proved too powerful and took the match in straight sets.

While the night ended in defeat, one highlight came from Deah Menedis (Sr., Reisterstown, Md. / Franklin ) as she became the first player in program history to reach 800 kills.

The Basics

Scores: No. 12 Wilson 0, No. 5 Cairn 3 (25-14, 25-10, 25-10)

Venue: Mason Activity Center

Records: Wilson 4-22, Cairn 16-6

How It Happened
  • Menedis got her first kill of the night to give Wilson a 3-2 lead on the Highlanders in the first set. It was short-lived as Cairn answered with the next three points and five of the next six. Consecutive kills by Angela Uhlhorn (FY, Kingsville, Md. / Catholic) and Allyson Garcelon (Jr., Shrewsbury, Pa. / Susquehannock) put the Phoenix back within striking distanced down 17-13, but Cairn scored the next six and eight of the next nine to take a 1-0 set lead.
  • An Abby Moreland (So., Sabillasville, Md. / Catoctin) ace helped the Blue and White jump out to a 3-1 lead to open the second before an 8-0 run put Cairn in control. Wilson only scored consecutive points once more the rest of the frame as the Highlanders went up 2-0. In the third, Amelia Edens (Sr., Pasadena, Md. / Glen Burnie) helped put Wilson in front early, first with a block assisted by Menedis and then with a kill, before Cairn took the next three points. Wilson stayed close until an 8-1 run made the score 15-7. The Highlanders kept the pressure on and went on to take the set and match.
Inside The Numbers
  • Moreland led the team with six kills and excelled defensively with a match-best 13 digs.
  • Menedis finished with five kills and picked up six digs.
  • The Highlanders featured a balanced attack with four different players recording at least seven kills. Bridget Dahn and Hendryl Peabody led the team with nine each.
