(CHAMBERSBURG, Pa.) – A fairly balanced game saw Wilson fall to Keystone in United East men's soccer action on Tuesday afternoon. Both teams' defenses stood out and they appeared destined early on to be en route to a scoreless draw, but the Giants were able to piece together a late first half goal to doom the Phoenix.
The Basics
Score: Wilson 0, Keystone 1
Venue: Kris's Meadow
Records: Wilson 5-8-0, 1-3-0 UE; Keystone 2-9-1, 1-2-1 UE
How It Happened
- From the get-go it was clear to see that contest would have a punch, counterpunch feel to it as each time one team had an opportunity, the other would change ends and create one of its own. This was strongly evident in the middle of the first as teams exchanged shots on five consecutive attempts in a six-minute span, all of which resulted in saves. Logan Neves (So., Fredericksburg, Pa. / Colonial Forge) came up big on all three Giants attempts to keep the game scoreless.
- With the first half clock winding down and already under a minute, Keystone was able to break through. Clay Nickles was able to keep possession down by the end line on the left side of the goal before a cross found Taylor Hammons in front of the net. He was able to get just enough on the ball to get the score and give the visitors a 1-0 advantage at the break.
- Wilson had three shots early in the second. Chris Natale (FY, Mt. Airy, Md. / Linganore) had a solid chance just under three minutes into the frame, but his take was stopped by Giants' keeper Landon Keller. The Phoenix had two more shots shortly after before the visitors' defense started to shut down Wilson chances. The Blue and White were only able two more shots on goal the rest of the day.
Inside The Numbers
- Wilson outshot Keystone 13-11 overall and 7-6 in shots on goal. Corner kicks, however, favored the Giants by a 7-1 margin.
- The Phoenix attack was balanced as all seven shots on goal came from seven different players.
- Neves played a strong game overall as he tallied five saves.
