Landon Scores OT Winner At Penn State Harrisburg

(MIDDLETOWN, Pa.) – Jill Ahlgren (Sr., Mercersburg, Pa. / Mercersburg) connected with Lizzie Landon (Jr., West Grove, Pa. / Avon Grove) for an overtime goal as Wilson scored a huge United East victory over Penn State Harrisburg on Saturday morning. The victory now gives the Phoenix the inside track to the No. 2 seed in the conference tournament in which they clinched a spot in the postseason with the win.

The Basics

Score: Wilson 3, Penn State Harrisburg 2 (OT)

Venue: PSH Turf Field

Records: Wilson 10-3, 3-1 UE; Penn State Harrisburg 9-5, 2-2 UE

How It Happened
  • Wilson had to come from behind not once, but twice as Harrisburg scored goals in the first and second periods to take the lead. The first came midway through the first as a long pass by Rachel Lane slipped through the bodies in front of the cage and found Sadie Cook on the far post who was able to redirect it in for the goal.
  • Paige Ney (Jr., Biglerville, Pa. / Biglerville) got Wilson back on track with a goal shortly into the second quarter. Landon set up the play by sending the ball toward the cage from the right wing. Kate Seymour (So., Churchton, Md. / Southern) was able to get a stick on the ball to deflect it which went towards Ney on the far post who stuffed it in for the goal.
  • The momentum was short-lived as the Nittany Lions went up a second team five minutes later thanks to a penalty corner. Lane sent in a shot from the top of the circle that eventually was deflected by Anna Moyer and allowed Harrisburg to take a lead into halftime.
  • About six minutes into the third, Seymour pulled Wilson even once again. Landon found her in the midfield and Seymour was able to do the rest herself as she dribbled around a Harrisburg defender up the right side of the field. Speeding towards the cage she was able to sneak it past the goalie for the score.
  • The score remained dormant for the rest of regulation and put Wilson into an overtime contest for the second time this season and first since the season opener. Like it was at Washington & Jefferson, the extra frame was good to the Blue and White. Midway through, Ahlgren found an opening from the left wing and charged in towards the goal. About five yards out she sent the ball in and it found its way to Landon on the far post who was able to knock it in for the win.
Inside The Numbers
  • As one might expect from an overtime game, numbers were fairly balanced with both teams generating eight shots each. All eight of Wilson's were on target while five were on the mark for the Nittany Lions.
  • Ney's goal was her conference-best 12th of the season and 40th of her career.
  • Landon's goal was her second of the season and first since last month against Eastern Mennonite.
  • Seymour now has seven goals, tied for sixth in the league.
  • Erin Sullivan (FY, Byram, N.J. / Lenape Valley) was pivotal between the pipes as she made three saves and thwarted numerous other high-grade chances.
Up Next
Wilson will host Lancaster Bible in the regular season finale and Pink Out Day on Thursday. A win would secure the second seed in the United East Championship tournament and a home game in the semifinal round on Saturday, Nov. 2.
