Phoenix Falter Against Falcons In Volleyball Action

(ALLENTOWN, Pa.) – The Wilson women's volleyball team had its winning streak ended by Cedar Crest in United East competition on Saturday afternoon. The Falcons took the battle of the birds by sweeping the Phoenix in three sets between teams previously tied in the conference standings.

The Basics

Scores: Wilson 0, Cedar Crest 3 (25-16, 25-22, 25-13)

Venue: Lees Gym

Records: Wilson 3-17, 2-4 UE; Cedar Crest 8-13, 3-3 UE

How It Happened
  • An early run gave Cedar Crest a fast start and a 9-3 lead which eventually built into a 14-5 advantage shortly after. The Phoenix were able to counter with a 6-0 run to climb back into contention thanks to kills from across the rotation. That was as close as Wilson could get though as the Falcons slowly pulled away from there to take the first set.
  • After another fast set from Cedar Crest, the Phoenix were forced to play the comeback role. The Falcons opened the frame with the first eight points, but the Blue and White fought back to tie the set at 15-all after a 7-0 run. The Phoenix were within one as late as 22-21 before the Falcons scored three of the next four for a 2-0 lead.
  • Wilson didn't allow the hosts to jump out to a quick start for the third, but they did start to slowly pull away after an Allyson Garcelon (Jr., Shrewsbury, Pa. / Susquehannock) tied the set at three. A 7-0 run late put the game out of reach as Cedar Crest won the most decisive set of the day.
Inside The Numbers
  • Niki Schussler (Sr., Chambersburg, Pa. / Cumberland Valley Christian) and Deah Menedis (Sr., Reisterstown, Md. / Franklin) led the attack with seven kills each.
  • Defensively Abby Moreland (So., Sabillasville, Md. / Catoctin) led the back line with 14 digs.
  • Garcelon registered three blocks on the day, two of which were solo.
  • The Falcons were led by Ellise Everett, Akashia Johnson, and Ziah Melton who had eight kills each.
