(WILLIAMSPORT, Pa.) – The Wilson women's soccer team had a robust task as it tried to knock off undefeated Penn in United East action on Wednesday. The Wildcats showed why they have been so successful this season as they shutout the Phoenix on the strength of a hat trick by the nation's leading scorer.
The Basics
Score: Wilson 0, Penn 6
Venue: UPMC Field
Records: Wilson 9-3-2, 2-3-0 UE; Penn 11-0-4, 4-0-1 UE
How It Happened
- The Phoenix looked to get a fast start as Halley Shaffer (Jr., Sunbury, Pa. / Line Mountain) fired off a shot 73 seconds into the game that went wide left. From there the Wildcats took control and put heavy pressure on the Wilson back line as six Penn shots followed over the next 10 minutes. Two were blocked and one was saved by Madison Ebersole (FY, Big Pool, Md. / Clear Springs), however the hosts eventually got on the board in the 16th minute on a set piece via corner kick.
- The Wildcats didn't wait long to find the back of the net again as Megan Kurian scored 1:23 later. The Phoenix kept the Wildcats tamed for the rest of the first, but Kurian wasn't finished and added her second of the night in the 50th minute. She completed the hat trick in the 56th minute to make the score 4-0.
- Penn completed the scoring with additional goals in the 64th and 86th minutes.
Inside The Numbers
- Penn led the shot chart by a 25-3 margin with 14 shots on goal. The Wildcats entered the game with the most goals scored by any team in the entirety of the NCAA.
- Erin Roszkowiak (Sr., Cinnaminson, N.J. / Cinnaminson) split time with Ebersole in goal. Both netminders made four saves on the day.
