(CHAMBERSBURG, Pa.) – A battle between two of the top field hockey teams in the United East took place as Wilson hosted St. Mary's on Wednesday afternoon. This time the Seahawks bested the Phoenix after they pulled away in the second half.
The Basics
Score: Wilson 0, St. Mary's 3
Venue: Wilson Hockey Field
Records: Wilson 9-3, 2-1 UE; St. Mary's 5-9, 3-0 UE
How It Happened
- The first quarter was largely a defensive game with only three total shots by both teams. Unfortunately for the Blue and White, the first one of those resulted in a goal for the Seahawks as Josie Shermeyer found Fiona Kortyna for a shot from the left side midway through the frame.
- Wilson held St. Mary's off the shot chart in the second quarter while taking two of their own, but neither were on target and the score remained 1-0 at the break.
- The Seahawks added more pressure with four shots in the third. The Phoenix did well to eliminate the threat on the bulk of them, but Shermeyer made another assist, this time to Emma Watkins, as St. Mary's made it a 2-0 game with 1:26 left in the quarter.
- A penalty corner gave Wilson a good opportunity to light up the scoreboard early in the fourth. Jill Ahlgren (Sr., Mercersburg, Pa. / Mercersburg), Lizzie Landon (Jr., West Grove, Pa. / Avon Grove), and Kate Seymour (So., Churchton, Md. / Southern) all got off shots on goal near the start of the period, but all three resulted in saves. It was their last shots of the game while the Seahawks added an insurance goal in the final seconds.
Inside The Numbers
- Shots were fairly even with Wilson just being edged out by an 8-7 margin. Both teams had four shots on goal.
- Corners were also fairly even with St. Mary's leading that category 6-4.
- Brea Kelso (Sr., Shippensburg, Pa. / Shippensburg) and Ahlgren both had two shots to lead the Wilson attack.
