(LANGHORNE, Pa.) – Deah Menedis (Sr., Reisterstown, Md. / Franklin) hit double digits in kills for the fourth time in the last five matches, but it wasn't enough as Wilson fell to Cairn in the United East opener. A talented Highlanders squad featured a balanced attack and downed the Phoenix in straight sets.
The Basics
Score: Wilson 0, Cairn 3 (25-17, 25-14, 25-16)
Venue: Mason Activity Center
Records: Wilson 1-14, 0-1 UE; Cairn 7-2, 1-0 UE
How It Happened
- Play was back-and-forth to start with neither team able to put on a lengthy run. Menedis was strong, however, as she scored four kills near the beginning, the last of which brought the Blue and White within one at 11-10. The Highlanders were able to answer with four-straight points to create some separation and got stronger from there to take the first set.
- Cairn opened with the first three points of the second, but the Phoenix didn't let it get away from them as Allyson Garcelon (Jr., Shrewsbury, Pa. / Susquehannock) and Menedis put down kills along with an ace from Abby Moreland (So., Sabillasville, Md. / Catoctin) to tie it up. Another Menedis kill kept it tied at 7-all, but the Highlanders then started an 11-0 run, the longest of the night, to put the frame out of reach and took a 2-0 lead.
- The start of the third was highlighted by a block from Garcelon and Alison Daniels (FY, Lititz, Pa. / Warwick) along with a Menedis strike that made the score 5-4. Cairn regained the lead with the next four points, and although the Phoenix answered with another Menedis kill as well as an ace, the hosts kept pulling away.
The Basics
- Menedis continued her hot streak with 12 kills as she inches closer to the milestone of 700 for her career. It's the eighth time this season she's reached double figures.
- She and Moreland also led the team defensively with 12 digs. For Menedis, it was the sixth time she reached double-figures in the category and was her third consecutive double-double. For Moreland, it was her fifth time picking up double digits.
- Michaela Windisch (So., Westminster, Md. / Catoctin) and Garcelon split the setting duties with 15 and nine assists, respectively.
