Women's Volleyball Downed By St. Mary's

(CHAMBERSBURG, Pa.) – Wilson continued play in the United East play by hosting St. Mary's College of Maryland on Saturday afternoon. Although the Phoenix offense was balanced, it was not enough to overcome the Seahawks as the visitors won the contest in straight sets.

The Basics

Scores: Wilson 0, St. Mary's 3 (25-20, 25-16, 25-15)

Venue: Gannett Field House

Records: Wilson 1-15, 0-2 UE; St. Mary's 10-9, 2-1 UE

How It Happened
  • Wilson started off well as a Niki Schussler (Sr., Chambersburg, Pa. / Cumberland Valley Christian) kill helped give the Blue and White an early 4-3 lead. After the Seahawks scored the next three, the Phoenix bounced back with kills from Allyson Garcelon (Shrewsbury, Pa. / Susquehannock) and Deah Menedis (Sr., Reisterstown, Md. / Franklin) along with a Garcelon ace to regain the lead. The visitors responded once again with another 3-0 lead, but this time they never relinquished it. A Menedis kill followed by a St. Mary's error put Wilson back within one before the Seahawks pulled away to take a 1-0 lead.
  • The Phoenix looked poised to bounce back in the second and used a 4-0 run to take their largest lead of the day. It started with a Seahawks error followed by kills from Addie Hebert (So., Gettysburg, Pa. / Gettysburg), Abby Moreland (So., Sabillasville, Md. / Catoctin), and Schussler. Unfortunately, St. Mary's started to surge ahead with a 7-0 rally that fed into a 15-2 run to take the second set.
  • In attempt to stay alive Wilson opened the third with a 4-1 lead after a pair of Garcelon kills helped the hosts go up 4-1. The Seahawks came right back to tie the set and eventually used a 4-0 run to go up 11-7. Wilson struggled to generate any kind of momentum from there on out as the Seahawks took the set and match.
Inside The Numbers
  • Menedis inched closer to the 700-kill plateau with seven more kills to bring her career total to 699. Garcelon also added seven to help lead the Phoenix.
  • Defensively Hebert paced the Phoenix with nine digs.
  • Julia Bobrowski led the Seahawks with 12 kills.
Up Next
The Phoenix will cross state liens to take on Saint Elizabeth on Wednesday, October 9.
