(CHAMBERSBURG, Pa.) – A 29-point effort by
Darryl Garib (Dallas, Texas / Forest Park) helped Wilson defeat Valley Forge at home on Tuesday evening. The senior forward fueled a second half fury as he score 23 points alone in the frame as the Phoenix were able to pull away despite a halftime deficit to the Patriots.
The Basics
Score: Wilson 65, Valley Forge 53
Venue: Gannett Memorial Field House
Records: Wilson 7-8, 5-1 Skye; Valley Forge 1-13, 1-5
How It Happened
- Wilson hoped to enforce its will early as a 3-pointer by Khalif Dickson (Sr., Hampton, Va. / Prince George / Eastern) followed by an Ethan Wilson (Jr., Manassas, Va. / Osbourn Park / Howard C.C.) steal that led to a Gary Robertson (Sr., Washington, D.C. / Potomac / Bryant & Stratton) fast break layup made the score 11-8 6:29 into the ballgame. Teams spent most of the remainder of the half jostling back and forth as neither could get away from the other. The Patriots found a little light late in the half and eventually went to the locker room up 31-27.
- Once the second half rolled around, the Blue and White wasted little time getting back in front. Garib lit the fuse with an old-fashioned 3-point play after he was fouled on a layup and converted the free throw to tie the game at 35-all. After an Ibraheem Bundu (Sr., Bowie, Md. / Largo / CCBC Dundalk) bucket, Garib added two more to give Wilson a 43-37 lead with 14:08 left in regulation.
- Following a timeout, Garib added another layup on a dish from Robertson to go up 49-40. Valley Forge didn't go away quietly, however, and mounted a comeback to get back within a possession over the next three minutes. Ethan Wilson was able to end the threat with a 3-pointer to make the score 52-46 with 6:42 to go.
- Defensively the Phoenix did their part as well. After Yaone Badisang's layup got the visitors within three, Valley Forge went without a field goal in the final 7:38 of the game. On the opposite end the Phoenix had a stretch of going 5-for-8 that helped put them up double-digits.
Inside The Numbers
- Garib's big night saw him go 12-for-21 for 29 points, his sixth consecutive game hitting the 20-ppoint plateau. The second half alone saw him go 9-for-13 for 23 points. He added 12 rebounds for his fifth double double of the season.
- Robertson added 11 points and did additional damage on offense with seven assists.
- Dickson had his best game of the year with a season-best 10 points. Perhaps none were bigger than his final four which game in the last minutes of the game as he slammed down two dunks to help keep the game out of reach for Valley Forge.
- Defensively Wilson had arguably its best game of the season as it blocked a season-high six shots and matched a season-best with 11 steals. Bundu and Ethan Wilson had two rejections each. Bundu and Garib also led the team with three steals each.
- Jeremiah Daye paced the Patriots with 16 points. Quintin Renigar added 12.
