Venue: Gannett Memorial Field House
Records: Wilson 8-8, 6-1 Skye; Clarks Summitt 2-15, 0-7
How It Happened
- Wilson had a strong start on the afternoon as it made its first four field goal attempts and six of the first eight in taking a 12-4 lead over Clarks Summit in the first 5:13 of play. The Phoenix also did well controlling the boards early on with a 7-1 rebounding edge during that time. While CSU was able to get back within a possession over the next 4:47, the Phoenix pushed their lead to double figures with an 8-0 run with a Bryce Smith (Jr., Bryan, Texas / A&M Consolidated) 3-pointer followed by a layup and triple by Ethan Wilson (Jr., Manassas, Va. / Osbourn Park / Howard C.C.).
- The best stretch for the Phoenix came at the end of the first half and the start of the second with an 11-0 run stretching over the halftime break. A pair of steals contributed to a late push in the final seconds of the first as Ethan Wilson made a swipe to feed Garib on a fast break with five seconds to go. On the inbounds, Ibraheem Bundu (Sr., Bowie, Md. / Largo / CCBC Dundalk) picked off Kelvin Chest and fed Wilson for a buzzer-beating dunk to send the Phoenix to the locker room on a high note. Once the second started, a trey by Smith and a Bundu layup put the Phoenix up 49-26 for the largest lead of the game.
- The Defenders didn't go away quietly and did start to chip away at the deficit. Their largest run of 9-0 followed shortly after and made the score 54-40 with 11:59 to go in the game. CSU was able to get within 10 after bucket by Chest, but the Phoenix didn't let them get any closer the rest of the way until the game was already decided and CSU hit a 3-pointer at the buzzer.
