Second Half Surge Helps Phoenix Soar Over Lions

(CHAMBERSBURG, Pa.) – .Adrianna Stricek (So., Harrisburg, Pa. / Trinity), Jewels Torres (So., York, Pa. / West York), and Mackenzie Caldwell-Degnon (FY, Rockville, Md. / Richard Montgomery) all scored in double figures as Wilson defeated Bryn Athyn in Skye Division action Sunday afternnoon. It was a tale of two halves as the Lions led by as many as 13 in the first half, but the Phoenix were able to almost erase that deficit by halftime and surged ahead to a double-digit lead in the fourth before settling for the nine-point victory.

How It Happened
  • Bryn Athyn exploded in the opening frame as the team shot 64% from the field to set the tone for the match-up. The Lions held the led throughout the first half and went up by as many as 13 at 32-19 after a Malia Bullock 3-pointer midway through the second quarter. At that time the Phoenix offense caught fire and went on a 14-2 run down the stretch to climb back within one by halftime.
  • That run extended to 19-3 with buckets by Torres, Stricek, and Lae Black (So., Laurel, Md. / Meade) gave Wilson a 67-52 lead with 6:46 to go in the game. The Phoenix were able to hold the double-digit advantage until a Lions jumper in the final seconds set up the final score.
Inside The Numbers
  • Stricek recorded her eighth double double on the season with 21 points and pulled down 14 rebounds. She was 7-of-13 from the field overall.
  • Torres reached double figures for the fourth-straight game and set career-high marks with 17 points and eight assists.
  • The Phoenix were 100% in free throws in the first two quarters with 6-for-6 and 5-for-5. The team ended the game with a 87% in free throws with 20-for-23 to easily set a new season-high mark from the charity stripe.
  • Three Lions players exceeded double-digit points. Zhymani Smith led the group with 15 points and three assists. Kaylia Duncan followed close behind and added 13, while Mara Johnson pulled down three assists.

The Phoenix will remain at home for another conference face-off as they host the Valley Forge Patriots. It will be another doubleheader with the women starting things off this time with a 4 p.m. tipoff.
