(MORRISTOWN, N.J.) – Wilson dropped a nailbiter as it resumed United East Skye Division play at St. Elizabeth on Wednesday evening. It goes down one of the closest games in program history as neither squad held more than a two-possession lead during the 40 minutes that featured 11 lead changes and 10 ties.
The Basics
Score: Wilson 56, St. Elizabeth 58
Venue: St. Joseph's Gym
Records: Wilson 5-8, 3-2 Skye; St. Elizabeth 5-7, 3-1 Skye
How It Happened
- As aforementioned, the game went back-and-forth as much as one could expect. The Eagles appeared to pull ahead midway through the first half as a pair of 3-pointers by Malamin Kaba gave the hosts five- and six-point leads, but both field goals were countered by a pair of Darryl Garib (Sr., Dallas, Texas / Forest Park) layups, which the latter set the score at 22-18 with 9:18 to go until the half.
- St. Elizabeth maintained the lead until Darren Green (Jr., Silver Spring, Md. / Springbrook) tied the game at 24-all with a jumper on a Gary Robertson (Sr., Washington, D.C. / Potomac / Bryant & Stratton) dish with 3:36 left in the first. Garib put Wilson back in front with another layup with 1:15 to go, but the Eagles tied the game their next trip down and hit a pair of free throws to go into the locker room up 28-26.
- Wilson made its strongest push at the lead at the start of the second half with a 9-1 run to take a 35-29 lead. Garib was responsible for six of them, while Robertson drained a triple in the middle of it.
- The Eagles eventually tied the game back up at 39-all leaving the teams to proverbially duke it out over the final 12:09 in regulation. A Green deuce put the Phoenix back up by two possessions at 52-48 with 4:45 left before the Eagles regained the lead with a pair of free throws with 2:19 to go.
- A Robertson assist led to a Garib layup as Wilson regained the lead, but St. E's answered its next trip down the floor. The Phoenix had multiple chances in the final 1:02 to take back the lead and win the game, but all four attempts were off the mark as the Eagles took the win.
Inside The Numbers
- Garib had another strong day as he continues to be one of the top scorers in the conference. He finished with 27 points and 10 rebounds for his fourth double double of the season and second in the last three games.
- Green had his best game of the year as he finished with 12 points, just one shy of his career high reached twice in consecutive games of January 2022.
- Robertson was close to double figures with eight points and dished out five assists to further aid the offense. Defensively he was strong as well with four steals on the night.
- Tye-Rell Monroe led the Eagles with 13 points and was 5-of-7 from the field. Jonathan Ramos was a rebound shy of a double double with 10 points.
