(MORRISTOWN, N.J.) – A trio of players scored in double-figures for Wilson, but it wasn't enough to overcome St. Elizabeth on the road Wednesday evening.
Allie Cullison (Jr., Westminster, Md. / Winters Mill / Kean) led the way with 15 points for the Phoenix, but the Eagles' Destiny Battle stole the show with a 27-point effort as both teams returned to United East Skye Division competition.
The Basics
Score: Wilson 61, St. Elizabeth 80
Venue: St. Joseph's Hall
Records: Wilson 4-8, 3-2 Skye; St. Elizabeth 9-3, 4-1 Skye
How It Happened
- The first quarter was largely competitive as Wilson shot 50% from the field in the opening frame. The Eagles did hold a six-point lead on a couple of occasions, but the Phoenix did well down the stretch to narrow their deficit to two points. Yaya Cannon (Sr., Lancaster, Pa. / Lancaster Catholic) was the catalyst behind the charge as she hit a pair of free throws and followed up with a buzzer-beating layup after an Eagles bucket to make the score 15-13 heading to the second quarter.
- While Wilson was shooting hot in the first, the roles were reversed in the second as St. Elizabeth caught fire. Mackenzie Caldwell-Degnon (FY, Rockville, Md. / Richard Montgomery) helped the Phoenix stay within striking distance after a 3-pointer made the score 29-24 with 4:14 to go in the half, but it was the last field goal for Wilson before the break as the Eagles went on a 14-2 run over that stretch.
- St. Elizabeth was able to increase its lead in the third before Wilson rallied in the fourth. Cullison sparked a fire in the Phoenix offense as she scored all the points in a 9-0 run, the largest of the game for the Blue and White. She opened with a pair of 3-pointers and added the old-school triple with a fastbreak layup with the and-one free throw. That made the score 67-50, but the Phoenix could get no closer the rest of the way.
Inside The Numbers
- Cullison reached double figures for the sixth time this season and the first team in the last three games as she totaled 15 points. The bulk of them came from range as she hit three triples. She was busy on the glass as well as she pulled down 10 rebounds for her first double double of the season.
- Adrianna Stricek (So., Harrisburg, Pa. / Trinity) joined her with another double double of her own as she scored 14 points and pulled down 12 rebounds. Stricek was 4-for-8 from the field and 6-for-8 on free throws. It was her sixth double double of the season.
- Cannon was also 50% from the field as she made 4-for-8 and hit a pair of free throws to hit double-figures with 10 points.
- The Eagles featured a talented lineup with four players in double-figures. Battle led the group with 27 points as she was 9-for-24 on the evening. Yasminah White and Paige Neal each added 13. Ahjionae Cobb added 10 more, while Laila Kendle pulled down 11 rebounds.
