Stricek Helps Phoenix Steal Win At Clarks Summit

(CLARKS SUMMIT, Pa.) – A steal off an inbounds by Adrianna Stricek (So., Harrisburg, Pa. / Trinity) resulted in a go-ahead layup with seconds left to help Wilson down Clarks Summit on Saturday afternoon. The Defenders were looking to put the game away after getting a rebound on a potential game-tying free throw attempt. They also had a chance after Stricek's layup to win, but missed both free throws with a second left.

The Basics

Score: Wilson 63, Clarks Summit 62

Venue: Huckaby Gymnasium

Records: Wilson 9-10, 8-4 Skye; Clarks Summit 2-15, 1-10 Skye

How It Happened
  • Wilson looked to set the tone early by a quick 4-0 lead and held the Defenders scoreless for the opening 2:50, but it was clear after a 3-pointer by the hosts this was destined to be a nail-biter as it tied the game at 14-all with 1:32 to go in the first. Even so, the Phoenix did catch fire and went on a 13-2 run. Mackenzie Caldwell-Degnon (FY, Rockville, Md. / Winters Mill) broke the tie with a layup to end the first. Baskets by Kate Seymour (FY, Churchton, Md. / Southern), Jewels Torres (So., York, Pa. / West York), Stricek, and a trey by Allie Cullison (Jr., Westminster, Md. / Winters Mill) made the score 27-16 just 1:55 into the second for the largest lead of the game by either team.
  • Clarks Summit was able to make adjustments at halftime and cut the Phoenix lead down to one with under a minute left in the third. That momentum fed into the fourth quarter and saw the Defenders take the lead on consecutive makes to open the final frame. With 3:56 to, a pair of free throws gave CSU a 62-58 lead.
  • A Stricek layup with 1:56 brought the Phoenix back within a possession. After Wilson forced a turnover, Yaya Cannon (Sr., Lancaster, Pa. / Lancaster Catholic) was fouled in the final seconds. She made the first free throw to get the deficit to one, but the second was rebounded by the Defenders. The hosts called a timeout to move the ball up the court with 13 seconds left.
  • After the timeout, Stricek was able to steal the inbounds and go up the left side for the go-ahead layup. However Clarks Summit was left with one final chance as a foul put the hosts at the free throw line with a second left. Fortunately for the Phoenix, both attempts were missed, and they were awarded the rebound to secure the win.
Inside The Numbers
  • Stricek's game-winning layup gave her 21 for game-high honors. She was 10-for-18 overall and pulled down eight rebounds. Her steal that provided the go-ahead score gave her three for the day.
  • Caldwell-Degnon added 16 after she was 5-for-9 overall with a pair of 3-pointers. Torres joined her in double-figures with 11. Torres was also exceptional finding the open player with six assists and made four steals defensively.
  • The Defenders were led by Keilani Araniva who scored 19 points. She was 9-of-15 overall. Serene Calderon pulled down a double-double with 10 points and 12 boards. She was three assists shy of a triple-double.
