(CHAMBERSBURG, Pa.) – Wilson's four-game win streak was snapped at the hands of Mary Washington in the Gannett Field House on Wednesday evening. The Phoenix gave the Eagles all they could handle for the first half, but the visitors were able to strike a hot iron in the second half and pull away for the victory.
The Basics
Score: Wilson 48, Mary Washington 72
Venue: Gannett Field House
Records: Wilson 9-9, Mary Washington 10-7
How It Happened
- Wilson had the hot hands first as Bryce Smith (Jr., Bryan, Texas / A&M Consolidated / Medaille) hit a pair of 3-pointers out of the gate for a quick 6-2 Phoenix lead. The Blue and White built upon that momentum as a Darryl Garib (Sr., Dallas, Texas / Forest Park) jumper and a dunk from Khalif Dickson (Sr., Hampton, Va. / Prince George / Eastern) gave the home fansreason to celebrate with a 10-4 lead.
- The Eagles caught fire themselves soon after and went on a 15-1 run over the next five minutes to take control of the game. Despite a triple by Tyrik Ward-Hoyte (Jr., Baltimore, Md. / Phelps / Clinton) that followed, momentum had switched to the visitors' side. Mary Washington was able to push its lead to 10 with 3:44 to go in the half before Wilson stormed back into contention. Garib fueled the charge as he scored seven consecutive points capped by an unconventional three-point play. A last second rebound and putback by Ibraheem Bundu (Sr., Bowie, Md. / Largo / CCBC Dundalk) allowed the Phoenix to go into the half with even more momentum as they were down just one.
- The Phoenix had the opportunity to tie the game in the early moments of the second, but each time the Eagles were able to answer. They eventually went on a 14-0 run that made the score 51-34 and was capped by a 3-pointer, the third consecutive make from range at that point in the game. Wilson was able to respond with triples by Garib, Jordan Miles (Sr., Waldorf, Md. / Westlake) and Dickson to cut the deficit down to 11, but Wilson could get no closer the rest of the way.
Inside The Numbers
- Both teams were fairly even in the first half as Wilson shot 43.5% compared to Mary Washington's 44.0%, but the second half was entirely different for the Eagles as they made 60% after they went 15-for-25. They were even better from behind the arc in the second half as they went 6-for-7, only missing their last attempt late in the second.
- Garib led the Phoenix with 12 points and pulled down five rebounds. Ward-Hoyte provided a spark off the bench with 10 points and was a perfect 4-for-4 on the night in doing so.
- The Eagles were led by Dorian Davis who led all players with 19 points. He 7-of-10 overall and 5-of-6 from deep.
- The defeat snapped a four-game winning streak for the Phoenix to give them a 4-1 record on the five-game home stand.
