OT Unkind For Phoenix At Clarks Summit

(CLARKS SUMMIT, Pa.) – Overtime has been a familiar place that Wilson has found success this season, but Saturday was different as the Phoenix fell to Clarks Summit in extra time. A Darryl Garib (Sr., Dallas, Texas / Forest Park) basket in the final seconds forced overtime, but the Defenders never trailed in the additional five minutes to even the season series.

The Basics

Score: Wilson 56, Clarks Summit 63 (OT)

Venue: Huckaby Gymnasium

Records: Wilson 9-10, 6-2 Skye; Clarks Summit 4-18, 2-9 Skye

How It Happened
  • Clarks Summit had the hot touch early as it jumped out to a 15-5 lead in the first 6:29 of the game. That lead increased to as many as 13 after a Hunter Plantz layup made the score 24-11 with just over seven minutes left in the first half.
  • The Phoenix started the head up on their return trip after that basket as Ethan Wilson (Jr., Manassas, Va. / Osbourn Park / Howard C.C.) sparked a 15-5 run with a layup. He and Bryce Smith (Jr., Bryan, Texas / A&M Consolidated) added 3-pointers to get the Phoenix within five at 24-19. Although the Defenders pushed their lead back out to 10, a Gary Robertson (Sr., Washington, D.C. / Potomac / Bryant & Stratton) layup, a pair of Ethan Wilson free throws, and a triple by Jordan Miles (Sr., Waldorf, Md. / Westlake) allowed Wilson to go into the halftime break with some momentum down just three.
  • A Garib trey opened up the second and quickly tied the game before Ibraheem Bundu (Sr., Bowie, Md. / Largo) put the Phoenix in front with a pair of foul shots. From there, the game largely remained within one possession for the rest of regulation. Clarks Summit found itself with a two-point lead after a Plantz free throw, but Garib was able to force overtime after scoring a layup on a feed from Miles with 12 seconds left in the half.
  • Both teams struggled at the start of overtime, but the Defenders eventually got the upper hand after a Kelvin Chest free throw with 3:51 to play. An Andrew Pelkey jumper followed to put the hosts up three, and they were able to keep the Phoenix out of rhythm the rest of the way limiting the Phoenix to only score from the free throw line the rest of the way.
Inside The Numbers
  • Ethan Wilson led the team with 19 points after he went 5-for-9 from the field overall, including 2-of-3 from behind the arc. Additionally, he was perfect on all seven attempts at the charity stripe.
  • Garib finished the game with 15 points as the only other double-figure scorer for the Phoenix.. He was 6-of-11 from the field.
  • Ashton West led the Defenders with 16 points. He was 5-of-8 from the field and 5-of-5 from the line. Pelkey added 15 points for CSU after he was 5-for-13.
  • Clarks Summit controlled the glass by a 34-20 margin. The Defenders also controlled the inside and outscored Wilson 32-20 in the paint.
  • Wilson's bench helped down the stretch and it outscored that of Clarks Summit's 31-22.
