(CHAMBERSBURG, Pa.) – Wilson used a bejeweled blitz to down Cedar Crest as
Jewels Torres (So., York, Pa. / West York) scored a career-high 23 points in Skye Division action Tuesday evening. The Phoenix guard did most of her damage in the second half as she helped the Blue and White come from behind against the Falcons.
The Basics
Score: Wilson 75, Cedar Crest 67
Venue: Gannett Field House
Records: Wilson 8-10, 7-4 Skye; Cedar Crest 7-8, 6-6 Skye
How It Happened
- The opening quarter was about as close as possible as neither team could obtain more than a one-possession lead. That trend continued well into the second as the first two possession lead didn't take place until a pair of Caylie Long free throws mad the score 28-23 with 2:16 left in the half. It was in the midst of small run by the Falcons that saw them take a 32-25 lead in the final minute, but Lae Black (So., Laurel, Md. / Meade) provided some momentum at the half by converting the unconventional three-point play after she was fouled on a layup with 17 seconds left.
- A pair of Torres bunnies at the start of the second helped the Phoenix tie the game once again and resume the trend that had preceded the bulk of the contest. A Mackenzie Caldwell-Degnon (FY, Rockville, Md. / Richard Montgomery) triple gave Wilson a 45-42 lead with 3:27 left in the third, but a late Falcons push gave the visitors a 52-51 lead heading into the fourth.
- Depth finally gave way as the Phoenix jumped out to a 63-56 lead. Another Torres layup broke a 56-all tie and was followed by a 3-pointer by Allie Cullison (Jr., Westminster, Md. / Winters Mill) just 21 seconds later to give the Blue and White a much needed boost. Following a Torres steal, Adrianna Stricek (So., Harrisburg, Pa. / Trinity) converted a layup to put the score at 66-58 with 4:24 left in regulation. The Falcons gave one last chance for a comeback with a layup, a steal, and a triple that made the score 70-67 with under a minute to go, but as they were forced to foul, the Phoenix went 5-of-6 at the charity stripe down the stretch to secure the win.
Inside The Numbers
- Torres' big night saw her drop 23, smashing her previous game-high of 12 set last season. She was 5-of-7 from the field and did some damage at the foul line where she made 13-of-17. Defensively she was impressive as well with five boards and three steals.
- Caldwell-Degnon was also on fire as she went 5-of-6 overall and 2-of-3 from range for 14 points.
- Stricek had another incredible game that featured her 10th double double of the season. She finished with 11 points and 14 rebounds, but also made a career-high six steals in the process.
- The Falcons were carried by Long who led all players with 32 points. She was 8-of-19 from the field and was 16-of-20 at the free throw line. She pulled down 15 rebounds, nine of which alone were on the offensive end, and made four steals.
- The bench was pivotal for the Phoenix as their reserves outscored those of the Falcons 23-0 in the game.
