(GWYNEDD VALLEY, Pa.) – Annie Smith (Fy., Hagerstown, Md. / North Hagerstown) scored two second half goals, but it wasn't enough as Wilson dropped to Gwynedd Mercy in non-conference action on Wednesday evening. While Smith was a catalyst for the Phoenix, the Griffins countered with Ksenia Semenovykh who turned in a hat trick to lift the hosts to victory.
The Basics
Score: Wilson 2, Gwynedd Mercy 3
Venue: Gwynedd Mercy Athletic Complex
Records: Wilson 7-3-1, Gwynedd Mercy 5-3-1
How It Happened
- Gwynedd Mercy opened up the scoring midway through the first half as Semenovykh broke through the Phoenix back line and was able to lift a shot to the upper right 90. Just over a minute layer the Griffins were able to regain control and Semenovykh found herself with the ball once again. This time she was on the right side and went to the upper left 90 in the 24th minute.
- From there the Phoenix attack lit up the shot chart with nine attempts during the rest of the half. Eight of them were on goal, but all were saved by Griffins netminder Madisson Ronn.
- Back-to-back goals took place in the early moments of the second half. Semenovykh was able to complete her hat trick in the 51st minute, while Smith finally found the back of the net for the Blue and White just 16 seconds later. Just after the restart Smith belted a shot from about 30 yards out and it was able to sneak in the lower right 90 for the first Phoenix score.
- Time eventually would run out on the Phoenix comeback attempt, but Smith was able to get her second in the final seconds. With a loose ball in the box and the Griffins' keeper coming out to play the ball, Smith was able to flick it in with 8.5 seconds left on the clock.
Inside The Numbers
- Smith's two goals give her six for the season and 19 points on the year. She is turning in strong numbers for a potential United East Skye Division Player of the Week nomination with three goals and two assists in two games this week alone.
- Wilson outshot the Griffins 24-12 overall on the night with a 19-6 count in shots on goal. Smith was behind 10 of them overall, eight of which were on goal. Halley Shaffer (So., Sunbury, Pa. / Line Mountain) had seven with four on target.
- The 19 shots on goal were the most by any team against the Griffins so far this season. The previous high was 16 set by Delaware Valley.
- The Wilson defense extended its streak to 551 minutes of not allowing a goal before Gwynedd Mercy ended it in the 23rd minute of the game
For The Record
- This was the first meeting all-time between the two schools.
- This was the last non-conference contest for the Phoenix this season.
