Balanced Offense Overpowers Patriots

(PHOENIXVILLE, Pa.) – Phoenixville may have been influenced by Phoenix Iron Works, but it was Wilson that was making a name for itself after Saturday's victory over Valley Forge. Annie Smith (Fy., Hagerstown, Md. / North Hagerstown) led an offensive minded odyssey of Phoenix that inundated the Patriots en route to the United East Skye Division triumph.

The Basics

Score: Wilson 7, Valley Forge 0

Venue: Patriot Field

Records: Wilson 8-3-1, 2-0-0 Skye Division; Valley Forge 0-6-0, 0-2-0 Skye Division

How It Happened
  • It didn't take Smith to get going as she found the back of the net just 2:38 into the contest on an assist from Rachel Coulter (Jr., Woodbridge, Va. / Garfield) after a corner kick. Just three minutes later, Smith blasted a shot from outside the left side of the box to the upper right 90 to give the Blue and White a quick 2-0 lead.
  • Keeping the pressure on, Bianca Sommers (So., Chambersburg, Pa. / Chambersburg) was able to capitalize and increase the lead as she scored in the 12th minute. Hannah Woodward (Sr., Gettysburg, Pa. / Biglerville) eventually followed to give Wilson a 4-0 lead heading into halftime with an assist from Julia Elliott (Jr., Annapolis, Md. / Broadneck) in the 34th minute.
  • The story remained the same in the second half as the Phoenix remained hot offensively. Halley Shaffer (So., Sunbury, Pa. / Line Mountain) got into the scoring column just 1:53 into the period to make the score 5-0. Insurance goals were added by Jade Wolfe (Jr., Mercersburg, Pa. / James Buchanan) on an assist from Kayla Richards (So., Hagerstown, Md. / North Hagerstown) and Zoe Rosen (Fy., Shepardstown, W.Va. / Jefferson) in the final 10 minutes to set up the final tally.
Inside The Numbers
  • Smith wrapped up a tremendous week were she has scored five goals and two assists. She now has 23 points on the year on eight goals and seven helpers. It's the second-most on the team behind Shaffer.
  • Speaking of Shaffer, her goal gives her a baker's dozen on the season. She entered the day tied for fifth in goals in Division III.
  • Wilson didn't yield a single shot to the Patriots while taking 29 itself. Of those, 20 were on goal. It's the first time the Phoenix haven't allowed a shot since last year's game against Valley Forge on September 28. The Patriots haven't been able to take a shot against the Phoenix since the 2019 season.
  • Wilson has won its last 10 meetings with Valley Forge.
  • The shutout was Wilson's seventh of the season.
