Phoenix Fall In Overtime To Etown

(CHAMBERSBURG, Pa.) – In a battle of the blues, it was Elizabethtown that edged Wilson in a close all-around game that ended in overtime on Wednesday afternoon. It was the first meeting between the two schools and the loss snaps a four-game win streak for the Phoenix while the Blue Jays have won their past two.

The Basics

Score: Wilson 2, Elizabethtown 3 (OT)

Venue: Wilson Hockey Field

Records: Wilson 5-2, Elizabethtown 4-2

How It Happened
  • Both teams had opportunities in the first quarter and appeared to score goals, first Etown then Wilson, but both scores were disallowed because of fouls. Wilson was able to get off two shots in the frame, but one was saved and another went wide as both teams went to the second scoreless.
  • Paige Ney (So., Biglerville, Pa. / Biglerville) helped Wilson light up the scoreboard first as she received a pass from Brea Kelso (Jr., Shippensburg, Pa. / Shippensburg) with 8:40 left to go in the half. It appeared that the Phoenix would take a 1-0 lead into the halftime break, but the Blue Jays were able to pull even as Drew Bridges was able to control a rebounded shot off the post and score with 37 seconds to go in the period.
  • Wilson was able to get back on top in the early goings of the third quarter. This time Payton Kendall (Jr., McConnellsburg, Pa. / Forbes Road) did the honors with an assist from Kate Seymour (Fy., Churchton, Md. / Southern). Once again, however, the visitors scored the equalizer late in the frame. Bridges put a shot on goal that was saved by Allyson Shindler (Gr., Manchester, Pa. / Northeastern), but Etown's Hannah Long scored on the put-back with 1:33 on the clock.
  • Both teams had chances in the fourth with the Blue Jays going wide on the first two shots while Kendall, Jill Ahlgren (Sr., Mercersburg, Pa. / Mercersburg / Gettysburg), and Seymour all had shots saved in the final three minutes. Wilson was awarded a penalty with just under two minutes left, but Etown's goalie made the save on Kelso's shot.
  • Overtime didn't last long. After fouls on both teams, the Blue Jays found themselves on a breakaway and Bridges was able to cross a pass from the right to the far post where Mia Fino tipped it in 57 seconds in.
Inside The Numbers
  • Wilson outshot the Blue Jays 15-11 overall in the game and 10-7 in shots on goal. Elizabethtown held the advantage on corners, however, by a 9-4 margin.
  • Ney's goal was her sixth on the season. All of them have come during her current five-game goal streak.
  • Kendall's goal was her second of the season and first since the second game of the year at Juniata.
  • Seymour's assist puts her on a four-game point streak. She now has 13 on the season split between five goals and three assists.
  • Kelso's now has two assists on the year, both of which have been scored in the last two games.
For The Record
  • The loss also snaps a 28-game win streak in games on campus. The last time the Phoenix dropped a contest on Philadelphia Avenue was a 3-1 decision against Keystone on Saturday, September 22.
Up Next
The Phoenix will be on the road for the next three contests, the first of which will come this Tuesday in Annville as they take on Lebanon Valley. Start time with the Flying Dutchmen is set for 7 p.m.
