(HARRISONBURG, Va.) – Kate Seymour (Churchton, Md. / Southern) continued her impressive weekend as she scored twice in leading Wilson to a victory over Eastern Mennonite on Sunday afternoon. The first year forward scored the go-ahead goal in the third quarter and added another in the fourth in helping the Phoenix extend their win streak to four games.
The Basics
Score: Wilson 3, Eastern Mennonite 1
Venue: EMU Turf Field
Records: Wilson 5-1, Eastern Mennonite 2-5
How It Happened
- After a scoreless first quarter where Wilson outshot the Royals 4-1, the Phoenix added to the pressure and took nine swings in the second with one finding the mark midway through the frame. That belonged to Paige Ney (So., Biglerville, Pa. / Biglerville) on a penalty corner setup from Brea Kelso (Jr., Shippensburg, Pa. / Shippensburg) with Jill Ahlgren (Sr., Mercersburg, Pa. / Mercersburg / Gettysburg) getting the assist.
- Eastern Mennonite eventually pulled even shortly into the second half when Kate Landis had a couple takes. The first one was blocked, but she was able to pick up the rebound and score the equalizer seconds later.
- The Royals' momentum didn't last long, however, as Wilson went back ahead in similar fashion four minutes later. Ahlgren had a couple of shots blocked before Seymour scooped up the loose ball and found the back of the net with 6:29 left in the third.
- EMU turned up the pressure in the fourth, the only quarter the Royals outshot Wilson. All seven of their shots came within a four minute span where they kept possession in their offensive zone. Allyson Shindler (Gr., Manchester, Pa. / Northeastern) provided the save on three of them while three more were blocked by the Phoenix defense.
- Eventually Wilson was able to switch ends of the field. Mia Brunet (So., Waynesboro, Pa. / Waynesboro) had a shot saved, but Wilson was able to maintain control and shortly after Seymour scored her second of the game on an assist from Kelso with 2:49 left in the contest.
Inside The Numbers
- Wilson outshot the Royals 28-12 overall in the contest and 17-5 in shots on goal. The bulk of those chances came in the middle frames where the Phoenix outshot the hosts 9-2 in the second and 10-2 in the third. It was the gave the Royals' goalkeeper Gracyn Arruda the opportunity to most saves of their season with 13.
- Seymour has been on a tear recently with four goals and two assists in the last three games. Three goals and an assist came this weekend alone.
- Ney has remained consistent the last two weekends as she extended her scoring streak to four games with five goals over that time.
- The victory is the third consecutive for the Blue and White over EMU. That streak began with a 3-0 triumph at home in 2017 before the series resumed last year with a 4-1 victory.
- Together Ney and Seymour both lead the United East along with Keystone's Vicky Mainero with five goals on the year. No one else in the league has more than two.
