Shaffer Scores Twice In Win vs. Royals

(HARRISONBURG, Va.) – Halley Shaffer (So., Sunbury, Pa. / Line Mountain) scored twice as Wilson increased its win streak to four games with a shutout of hosting Eastern Mennonite on Friday night. Shaffer scored once in each half while the Phoenix defense did its job in preventing the Royals from having too many offensive opportunities.

The Basics

Score: Wilson 2, Eastern Mennonite 0

Venue: EMU Turf Field

Records: Wilson 4-2-1, Eastern Mennonite 0-4-1

How It Happened
  • Wilson had a couple cracks at the goal in the first 10 minutes, but both shots by Shaffer were saved by Royals keeper Anna Filipkowski. EMU countered with four shots over the next 10 minutes, but only one was on target with Rebecca Marakovitz (Jr., New Market, Md. / Linganore) making the stop.
  • The Phoenix kept pressuring the Royals' back line and eventually broke through in the 42nd minute. Annie Smith (Fy., Hagerstown, Md. / North Hagerstown) provided the assist while Shaffer hit paydirt on her fifth shot of the frame.
  • The momentum carried over into the second half where Wilson fired off five shots in the first 10 minutes. Two more followed in the 65th and 67th minutes with Shaffer scoring her second on the latter.
  • The Royals were limited to just two shots the rest of the way, only one of which was on goal. Marakovitz once again made the save and recorded her second consecutive clean sheet.
Inside The Numbers
  • Wilson controlled possession for most of the game and outshot the hosts 16-10 with a 10-4 advantage in shots on goal. Shaffer equaled the Royals by herself with 10 shots, seven of which were on target.
  • Marakovitz' clean sheet was the second of the season and the 10th of her career.
  • Shaffer scored her seventh and eighth goals of the season. Smith has been the provider on half of them with four of her five assists going to Shaffer.
  • Shaffer has registered double digits in shots over the last four games. During that time she has totaled 44 shots. She is tied for fifth in the nation with 7.00 shots per game.
