Ney Leads Wilson In Championship Game vs. Allegheny

(CHAMBERSBURG, Pa.) – Paige Ney (So., Biglerville, Pa. / Biglerville) scored twice to help Wilson skip past Allegheny in the championship game of its home invitational on Sunday afternoon. Both teams battled for the first quarter before the Phoenix were able to find the back of the net in the second and pull away.

The Basics

Score: Wilson 3, Allegheny 1

Venue: Wilson Hockey Field

Records: Wilson 3-1, Allegheny 1-3

How It Happened
  • The Gators had the advantage early and were able to fire off three shots in the first five minutes. Only the first was on goal, but Allyson Shindler (Gr., Manchester, Pa. / Northeastern) was there to make the stop. Hannah Aker (Jr., Yardley, Pa. / Pennsbury) was able to take a swing a few minutes later off a corner, but that too was saved by Allegheny netminder Meredythe Baird.
  • Both teams traded shots to start the second before Ney lit up the scoreboard for the first time six minutes into the frame. Kate Seymour (Fy., Churchton, Md. / Southern) assisted the play after having her own shot saved seconds before. Just before halftime, Wilson took advantage of a penalty corner as Seymour scored on an assist from Angela Keomahavong (Fy., San Jose, Calif. / Cupertino).
  • The Phoenix extended their lead to 3-0 as Ney scored her second of the afternoon. She sent it in off the left side and had it ricochet off a defender for the score with 4:15 left in the third.
  • The Gators avoided the shutout as they also took advantage of a penalty corner. Maddy Keenan started the play and was the beneficiary of an assist from Jamie Marchewka for the goal. Wilson was able to avoid further damage and prevented the Gators from getting off another shot the rest of the way to preserve the win.
Inside The Numbers
  • Ney's multiple goal game was the fourth of her career. After her goal yesterday, she now has three on the season.
  • Seymour's goal was her second of the year after she also scored in the season opener.
  • Wilson held the shot advantage by an 11-7 count. Nine of the 11 were on goal compared to five for the Gators. Shindler made the save on four of them and kept the visitors scoreless for the 55:27 she played.
  • Keomahavong's assist was the first point of her collegiate career.
For The Record
  • The gives the Phoenix their first Wilson Invitational championship since 2017 when they defeated Ferrum and Eastern Mennonite coincidentally on Saturday, Sept. 9, and Sunday, Sept. 10, respectively.
  • Coincidentally again, the two aforementioned teams just happen to be the Blue and White's next two opponents whom they will play next weekend also on consecutive days.
  • The win is Wilson's 28th consecutive victory on campus dating back to a 7-0 win against Bryn Athyn on Saturday, Sept. 29, 2018.
