(CHAMBERSBURG, Pa.) – A couple of high scoring affairs resulted in a split between Wilson and Cairn in CSAC action on a warm Wednesday afternoon. Unfortunately for the Phoenix, they dropped the first one as the Highlanders had the bats swinging, but the Blue and White rebounded nicely for a big win in the nightcap.
The Basics
Scores: Game 1 – Wilson 1, Cairn 13
Game 2 – Wilson 15, Cairn 8 (6 innings, darkness)
Venue: Kris's Meadow – Softball Field
Records: Wilson 7-11, 1-3 CSAC; Cairn 6-10, 1-1 CSAC
How It Happened (Game 1)
- Cairn opened up a 4-0 lead after scoring a couple of runs in each of the first two innings. From there neither team scored until the fifth inning. Wilson had a great opportunity in the bottom of the fourth, but left the bases full before getting a run in.
- The fifth inning produced better results for the Phoenix as Alyssa Wenger (Jr., Chambersburg, Pa. / Chambersburg) made her way around the bases. She initially reached on a walk, and after a fielders choice moved her to second, she scored from second as Haiden Brookens (Jr., Fayetteville, Pa. / Chambersburg Magnet) hit a fly ball to right that got lost in the sun for the defense.
- Unfortunately the Phoenix couldn't do any more damage as they left a pair of runners stranded. The Highlanders also responded with four more runs in the top of the sixth. Five more runs followed in the seventh to set up the final score.
How It Happened (Game 2)
- The Phoenix regrouped and had the bats swinging in the second game. The results started showing up in the second inning as they put up a four-spot. Addyson Stewart (XXX) hit in the first run with a bases-loaded base hit through the right side. Two batters later Haley Privett (Jr., Fayetteville, Pa. / Chambersburg Magnet) walked in another run. Riley Henry (So., Carlisle, Pa. / Carlisle) doubled the lead with a base hit up the middle to score Wenger and Stewart.
- Cairn was quick to answer and tied the game in the top of the third, but Wilson regained the lead with another big inning in the bottom of the fourth. A Stewart single and a Brookens walk set up Privett who promptly singled through the left side to bring in Stewart. After coming in as a pinch runner for Privett, Amelia Edens (So. Pasadena, Md. / Glen Burnie) took advantage of an infield error on a fielder's choice for the next run. Consecutive base hits by Madison Briggs (Fy., Lock Haven, Pa. / Central Mountain) and Paige Dill (Fy., New Oxford, Pa. / New Oxford) brought in Henry and Stevens, respectively, to make the score 8-4.
- The Highlanders scored a pair in the top of the fifth, but it was the closest they would get. Wilson answered in the bottom half as a pair of bases-loaded walks to Stevens and Alecia Hamilton (Sr., Canton, Ohio / GlenOak) as well as a ground out by Briggs all scored runs to make the score 11-6.
- Two more runs followed for Cairn, but Wilson got the last word in once again in the bottom of the sixth. Wenger led off the inning with a single, stole second, got to third on a wild pitch, and scored on a single to right by Brookens. A passed ball followed that allowed Stewart to score, and Brookens eventually scored on a ground out. The Phoenix weren't done as Makenna Snodgrass (Sr., Flagstaff, Ariz. / Flagstaff) singled up the middle with the bases loaded.
- Although the Phoenix were short of the eight runs to end the game on a mercy rule, the game was called off because of darkness giving Wilson the win and split.
Inside The Numbers
- Dill was the pitcher of record for the Phoenix in both games. She now moves to 4-4 overall on the season.
- Brookens had an incredible day from the plate as she went a combined 6-for-8 with two RBI, two runs scored, and a walk.
- After going hitless in the opener, Stewart made up for it in the second by going a perfect 4-for-4 with four runs scored, an RBI, and a walk.
- Privett drove in three runs and scored one herself with a base hit and two walks.
- The 16 hits in Game 2 are the most in a single game by the Phoenix this season.
