Phoenix Set Single Game Home Run Record In Win

(DUNMORE, Pa.) – The Wilson baseball team completed the sweep of its series with Clarks Summit with a convincing victory on Friday afternoon. Throughout the series the Phoenix outscored the Defenders by a combined score of 56-7.

The Basics

Score: Wilson 27, Clarks Summit 7 (7 innnings)

Venue: Schautz Stadium

Records: Wilson 28-7, 12-3 CSAC; Clarks Summit 4-31, 0-18 CSAC

How It Happened
  • The Phoenix didn't waste any time pouring on the runs as they posted 11 in the first inning. Jordan McKenzie (Jr., White Plains, Md. / Southern Maryland) lit the fuse with a solo home run for his eighth round-trip of the season. It started a string of five consecutive hits with Alex Seidleck (So., Crownsville, Md. / Indian Creek) and Doc Daniels (So., Deal Island, Md. / Crisfield) hitting in runs to make it 4-0. Brady Andre (Jr., Brookeville, Md. / Sherwood) followed with a sac fly and Garrett Griebel (Fy., Kent Island, Md. / Kent Island) tripled to left center during his second at-bat in the inning to make the score 7-0. McKenzie, Gerald Buchanan (Gr., Olney, Md. / Montgomery CC), and Seidleck brought in four more runs to close the scoring.
  • After adding another run in the second, the long ball started to become a theme for the Phoenix hitters. Jordan Daphney (So., Countryside, Fla. / Brunswick) and Vinny Hall (Fy., Fulton, Md. / St. Johns) fired back-to-back jacks to make the score 15-0 in the third. One inning later Michael Marrale (5th, Sykesville, Md. / Old Dominion) and Andre left the yard to help make it 19-0.
  • The Defenders avoided the shutout as they plated a pair in the fifth inning. Three base hits and a walk led to the first run while the second was scored as Jack Pachella (Fy., Wayne, Pa. / ), Griebel, and Kade Linton (Fy., Frederick, Md. / Tuscarora) twisted a double play. Linton extended the lead by two a couple of innings later as he hit Wilson's sixth dinger of the day for a 27-2 lead in the seventh. The Defenders added an inside-the-park home run to set the final score.
Inside The Numbers
  • The six home runs hit in the game by the Phoenix sets a new program record for most in a single game. The previous total of five was achieved twice. The last time it happened came in Game 2 of last season's doubleheader at Clarks Summit played in Scranton almost exactly a year to today on April 29. The first time it happened occurred on was against Pitt-Greensburg on March 9, 2021.
  • The numbers Wilson put up in the first inning alone were enough for many teams in an entire game. The 11 runs are one shy of the program record for most in a single inning and were scored on 12 hits. McKenzie, Marrale, Buchanan, and Seidleck evenly split eight of them and eight of the nine Phoenix batters hit safely by the end of the frame.
  • The 32 hits are by far the most in a single game this season. The previous best was 26 at Rosemont in the begging of the month.
  • The 27 runs marks the fifth time this season the Phoenix have reached the 20-run plateau. It's the 20th time they have scored at least 10 runs this season and are 19-1 in those games.
  • Thirteen different players combined for the 32 Phoenix hits. Daphney did the most damage by going 4-for-4 with three RBI and four runs scored with a home run. Marrale was also 4-for-4 with a home run, three runs scored, and two RBI. Griebel also recorded four hits and was a home run shy of a cycle. His 4-for-7 day included a triple, two doubles, three RBI, and a run scored.
  • Three-hit games came from the bats of McKenzie, Buchanan, and Seidleck. Two of Buchanan's three were doubles, and he circled the bases three times while hitting in another pair. Seidleck had three RBI and two runs while McKenzie had two RBI and two runs.
  • Bryan DeCarlo (Jr., Gaithersburg, Pa. / Hagerstown CC), Daniels, Linton, and Hall all had multiple hit games and scored two runs each. Linton had three RBI.
  • Seth Smart (Fy., Seaford, Del. / Woodbridge) started the game and did well to stifle Clarks Summit through 4.0 innings of work to improve to 4-0 on the year. He struck out two and allowed just three hits and a walk.
Up Next
