(CHAMBERSBURG, Pa.) – It was Senior Day for the Wilson softball team as it hosted Hood in a non-conference doubleheader on Sunday afternoon. Unfortunately for the Phoenix, the Blazers cooperate with the happy festivities as they took both games of the twin bill.
Before the games, seniors
Marina Monsalve (Corona, Calif. / Centennial), Makenna Snodgrass (Flagstaff, Ariz. / Flagstaff), Alicia Hamilton (Canton, Ohio / GlenOak), and
Kaesey Greene (Taneytown, Md. / Francis Scott Key) were all honored before the crowd.
The Basics
Scores: Game 1 – Wilson 2, Hood 14
Game 2 – Wilson 3, Hood 6
Venue: Kris's Meadow
Records: Wilson 10-20, Hood 11-23
How It Happened (Game 1)
- The Phoenix opened the scoring in the opener with a solo run in the second. With two outs, Claudia Umbrell (Gr., Willow Hill, Pa. / Fannett Metal) sparked a small rally with a single to right center. With Katherine Kimmel (So., Dover, Pa. / Northern York) pinch running, Madison Briggs (Fy., Lock Haven, Pa. / Central Mountain) singled through the right side to put Kimmel on third. Greene followed up with an infield single to score Kimmel.
- Unfortunately for the Blue and White, the momentum wave was short lived. Hood added five runs in the top of the next inning to take control of the game. Wilson was able to get one run back in the bottom of the fourth as a wild pitch allowed Ashley Stevens (So., Valencia, Calif. / Valencia) to get to third and a resulting error on the throw in an attempt to get her out allowed her to score.
- Hood came right back and put up a four-spot in the fifth inning. The Blazers kept the Phoenix off the board the rest of the way and added five in the seventh to set up the final score.
How It Happened (Game 2)
- The Phoenix fared better in the second game and got off to a strong start. Haiden Brookens (Jr., Fayetteville, Pa. / Chambersburg Magnet) put the hosts in scoring position with a double to right center that moved Stewart over to third. After a fielder's choice retired Stewart, Brookens scored on a wild pitch. One batter later, Riley Henry (So., Carlisle, Pa. / Carlisle) scored after taking advantage of an infield error.
- The Blazers came back with four hits and a walk to take a 4-2 lead in the top of the second. Wilson was able to cut the deficit back down to one as Alyssa Wenger (Jr., Chambersburg, Pa. / Chambersburg) belted a trip down the left field line and scored one batter later as Klarissa Miley (Fy., Spring Run, Pa. / Fannett Metal) sacrificed herself for the run.
- Hood kept at it and increased its lead with solo runs in the third and fifth. Wilson was limited to two hits the rest of the way as the Blazers completed the sweep.
Inside The Numbers
- Greene performed well on her Senior Day as she went a combined 3-for-6 on the day. She was 2-for-3 in the opener while hitting in a run.
- Stewart had a multiple hit game in the night game as she went 2-for-4 with a double.
