Phoenix Swept By St. E's

(MORRISON, N.J.) – The Wilson softball team was defeated in both games of its penultimate conference doubleheader at St. Elizabeth on Saturday afternoon. The results put the Phoenix in danger of missing the playoffs, but they can still qualify for the postseason if they sweep Notre Dame next week and receive some help from other teams.

The Basics

Scores: Game 1 – Wilson 3, St. Elizabeth 7
Game 2 – Wilson 3, St. Elizabeth 10

Venue: SEU Softball Fields

Records: Wilson 10-18, 4-10 CSAC; St. Elizabeth 19-9, 9-3 CSAC

How It Happened (Game 1)
  • The opener was largely a defensive game with the exception of a big inning by the Eagles. However, both teams got on the board with a solo run in the first inning. Wilson got on the board as Haley Privett (Jr., Fayetteville, Pa. / Chambersburg Magnet) singled to center to bring in Alyssa Wenger (Alyssa Wenger) who led off the game with a base hit. The Eagles were quick to tie it up as they answered with a home run in the bottom of the frame.
  • Privett found herself on base with another base hit in the fourth and advanced to second on an error by the St. Elizabeth catcher. Riley Henry (So., Carlisle, Pa. / Carlisle) then brought her in with a double to left to take a 2-1 lead. The Phoenix were able to extend their lead thanks to another Eagles miscue as Wenger scored thanks to a pair of infield errors.
  • Unfortunately for the Phoenix, the Eagles rallied in the bottom of the fifth. They started the inning with five consecutive hits, allowing them to tie the game and gain the lead. Another pair of hits brought in another pair of runs as the Eagles set the final score at 7-3.
How It Happened (Game 2)
  • Wilson scored first once again as Wenger led off with a walk, stole second, advanced to third on a passed ball, and scored on a single to left by Henry. Any momentum was short lived as the Eagles put up a five spot in both the first and second innings for a 10-1 lead.
  • The Phoenix were able to soften the result with a couple of more runs. Kaesey Greene (Sr., Taneytown, Pa. / Francis Scott Key) scored the first of those in the top of the fourth after getting on thanks to a walk, moving to second on a wild pitch, and scoring thanks to a pair of ground outs. Haden Brookens (Jr., Fayetteville, Pa. / Chambersburg Magnet) singled in Henry one inning later.
Inside The Numbers
  • Wenger started a new scoring streak as she circled around the diamond three times on the day. She hit safely in both games and added a triple and a walk in the second.
  • Henry and Brookens hit safely in both games. Henry finished with three base hits on the day to lead the team.
  • Privett's multiple hit game in the opener was her sixth of the season.
Up Next
Wilson will be back in action for Senior Day on Sunday. The Phoenix will play host to Hood for the twin bill. Additionally they will play Juniata in a rescheduled doubleheader on Wednesday at 4 and 6 p.m.
