(CRESSON, Pa.) – The Wilson battery struck out a season-high 20 batters while the bats once again provided some heavy hitting to give the Phoenix another win on Sunday afternoon. It extends the program-record winning streak to 12 games for the Blue and White.
The Basics
Score: Wilson 12, Mount Aloysius 2
Venue: Calandra-Smith Field
Records: Wilson 23-5, Mount Aloysius 11-15
How It Happened
- Brayden Stutzman (Fy., Mt. Airy, Md. / South Carroll) got the start for the Phoenix and was on fire from the opening pitch. He was nearly unhittable and retired multiple batters that will have him in Pitcher of the Week contention. The collegiate rookie struck out three in the first inning, two more in the second, three in the third, and two more in both the fourth and fifth innings for a season-best 12.
- In the meantime, the Phoenix started the scoring with a four-spot in the third inning. Jordan McKenzie (Jr., White Plains, Md. / Southern Maryland) led off the frame with a triple down the right field line and scored immediately after on a Garrett Griebel (Fy., Kent Island, Md. / Kent Island) groundout. Wilson kept the pressure on as Dean Mercer (Sr., Dunedin, Fla. / Clearwater Catholic Central) and Michael Marrale (5th, Sykesville, Md. / Old Dominion) reached on a single and a walk, respectively. Both eventually scored on consecutive base hits by Doc Daniels (So., Deal Island, Md. / Crisfield) and Brady Andre (Jr., Brookeville, Md. / Sherwood). Daniels then scored on a ground out by Jack Pachella (Fy., Wayne, Pa. / Radnor) to make the score 4-0.
- The Phoenix further blew the game open with three runs in the fourth. A walk and a pair of base hits set up Mercer who hit in Peyton Taylor (Jr., Worton, Md. / Kent County / Cabrini) with a single to left for the first run. Marrale followed up with an RBI fielder's choice to score McKenzie, and an infield error by the Mounties allowed Griebel to score on the same play.
- Two more runs followed in the sxith. A Pachella sac fly scored Mercer before a throwing error by the Mounties' catcher on a stolen base attempt allowed Daniles to score to give Wilson a 9-0 lead.
- Both teams plated a pair in the eighth. Wilson's runs came on consecutive doubles as Pachella lined one down the third base line to left field to bring in Daniels and Jordan Daphney (So., Countryside, Fla. / Brunswick) sailed one to left center to score Pachella. The Mounties avoided the shutout as they evened the inning with a two-RBI single to left in the bottom half. Marrale set up the final score with a sac fly in the ninth to score McKenzie.
Inside The Numbers
- Stutzman recorded the win to improve to 2-0 on the season. He struck out 12 of the 17 batters faced and allowed just two hits in 5.0 innnings of work.
- Emilio Rodriguez (Fy., Baltimore, Md. / Archbishop Curley) came on in relief and pitched a pair of perfect innings for the sixth and seventh with four of the six outs coming on strikes.
- Seven Phoenix batters combined for 15 hits with four of them having multiple hit days. Daniels led the way with a 4-for-5 day with an RBI and three runs scored. Mercer and McKenzie both had three-hit days. Mercer had an RBI and scored two runs while McKenzie scored thrice.
- Pachella tallied three RBI and scored once.
