Phoenix Set New Records In CSAC Opener

(SWEET BRIAR, Va.) – It was a successful CSAC opener for Wilson as it cruised by Sweet Briar on a warm Wednesday afternoon. The Phoenix had little trouble with the Vixens and guaranteed a winning regular season for the first time in the program's history.

The Basics

Score: Wilson 22, Sweet Briar 1

Venue: Thayer Field

Records: Wilson 8-3, 1-0 CSAC; Sweet Briar 1-6, 0-2 CSAC

How It Happened
  • Sweet Briar won the opening draw, but Wilson quickly righted the ship and scored on a shot by Emily Young (So., Fairfax, Va. / Chantilly) off a pass from Sague Lague (So., Fairplay, Md. / Goretti) 2:25 into the game. Anna Gibson (Jr., Cecil County, Md. / Perryville) quickly made it 3-0 with a pair of goals over the next 1:58. Jill Ahlgren (Jr., Mercersburg, Pa. / Mercersburg) followed up with a draw control win and scored on an assist from Delaney Fulfer (Jr., Greencastle, Pa. / Greencastle). After Lague scored on a feed from Paige Reynolds (Sr., Keedysville, Md. / Boonsboro), Ahlgren went on to score the next three goals before Gibson closed the first with third of the game.
  • Lague quickly made it a 11-0 on a pair of free-position shots at the start of the second. Goals by Gibson and Ahlgren gave the Phoenix a baker's dozen at the half.
  • The Vixens scored their lone goal shortly into the third as Victoria Schofield won the draw and went down the field and scored, but that was the lone blemish on an otherwise impenetrable Phoenix defense. Lague hastily got the goal back by scoring on a Jordan Hastie (So., Frederick, Md. / Governor Thomas Johnson) assist 2:23 in the half. Fulfer, Young and Ahlgren added to the lead for a 17-1 advantage at the end of three.
  • The fourth period was more of the same as Ahlgren, Gibson and Lague helped set up the final score.
Inside The Numbers
  • Ahlgren put up massive numbers once again on both sides of the field. Offensively she scored eight goals to match the program record and added four assists for 12 points. Defensively she caused five turnovers, picked up seven ground balls, and won seven draw controls.
  • Gibson also put up huge numbers as she scored a career-high six goals. Her fifth gave her 50 for her career.
  • Lague also had a career day. Her five goals were one short of her career high, but her four assists and nine points set new PR's for the sophomore. Lague also had three caused turnovers defensively.
  • Wilson outshot Sweet Briar 43-6 on the day. Of the six shots taken by the Vixens, five were on goal. Krystal Kienast (Jr., Purcellville, Va. / Loudon Valley) made saves on both on-target takes in the first half while Morgan Melucci (Fy., Hanover, Pa. / South Western) made a pair of saves in the second half.
  • As a result of the win, Wilson guaranteed itself a winning record in the regular season for the first time in program's history.
  • The score also gave Wilson its largest margin of victory and most goals scored in a CSAC contest.
