Women's Lacrosse Comeback Bid Comes Up Short

(CHAMBERSBURG, Pa.) – In its closest game of the year, Wilson came up just short against Goucher in non-conference competition on Tuesday afternoon. The Phoenix put on a strong attempt to rally down the stretch with two goals in the final six minutes, but ended up losing by one to the Gophers.

The Basics

Score: Wilson 10, Goucher 11

Venue: Kris's Meadow

Records: Wilson 5-3, Goucher 3-8

How It Happened
  • Goucher was the first team to get on the board after taking the opening draw and scoring 50 seconds into the game. Afterwards there was a stalemate until 5:28 left in the period when Jill Ahlgren (Jr., Mercersburg, Pa. / Mercersburg) found Paige Reynolds (Sr., Keedysville, Md. / Boonsboro) to tie the game. The Gophers answered back just over a minute later, but Wilson closed the frame with goals by Ahlgren and Reynolds for a 3-2 lead heading to the second.
  • Wilson extended its run to 4-0 as Emily Young (So., Fairfax, Va. / Chantilly) scored on a helper from Anna Gibson (Jr., Cecil County, Md. / Perryville) and Ahlgren scored her second of the game midway through for a 5-2 lead. The Gophers scored to cut the deficit down to two with 2:33 left in the half before the Phoenix pushed their lead back to three as Gibson found the back of the net on a dish from Reynolds.
  • The Phoenix pushed their lead even further as Ahlgren took the feed from Gibson to make the score 7-3, but the Gophers rallied with a 6-0 run to take the lead. Reynolds scored at the start of the fourth to get Wilson back within one, but Goucher scored the next two. The goals proved to be needed as Gibson and Young both scored late. Wilson had one last opportunity, but the Gophers made the defensive stop and were able to run out the clock.
