(VIRGINIA BEACH, Va.) – Wilson's regular season winning streak came to an end in a non-conference clash with Virginia Wesleyan on Wednesday afternoon. The Phoenix strung together a program-record seven consecutive games dating back to last season before being upended by the Marlins.
The Basics
Score: Wilson 4, Virginia Wesleyan 12
Venue: Birdsong Field
Records: Wilson 4-1, Virginia Wesleyan 1-5
How It Happened
- Virginia Wesleyan initially got on the board as Mikayla Szudera scored on an assist from Helen Kennedy-Butler 3:32 into the contest. The Phoenix were quick to respond as Jill Ahlgren (Jr., Mercersburg, Pa. / Mercersburg) won the ensuing draw control and Anna Gibson (Jr., Cecil County, Md. / Perryville) scored just 59 seconds later.
- From there, defenses for both teams were impenetrable. Both teams were able to fire off four shots, but Krystal Kienast (Jr., Purcellville, Va. / Loudon Valley) made saves on all of the Marlins' attempts while Ahlgren narrowly missed giving the Phoenix the lead by hitting the post.
- The second quarter was a different story as the host's offense started clicking. The Marlins regained the lead just over a minute into the period and added another goal 1:28 later. It was a part of a seven-goal quarter with four goals scored in the last five minutes before the half.
- The score remained the same until midway through the third as Gibson scored her second of the game just under the 7:00 mark, but the Marlins answered 25 seconds later to go back up eight.
- Paige Reynolds (Sr., Keedysville, Md. / Boonsboro) got into the scoring column while Gibson secured her hat trick in the fourth to cap the Phoenix scoring.
Inside The Numbers
- Gibson's hat trick was her second of the season. She now has 10 goals and 15 points on the year. She has scored in every game this season and has an eight-game goal scoring streak going back to last season.
- Reynolds has also scored in every game this season and joins Gibson with 10 goals on the year. She has a nine-game point scoring streak going back to last season.
- Ahlgren led the team defensively as she caused a game-high six turnovers. She picked up five ground balls and won three draw controls to lead the team.
- Kelly Lepouski (Sr., Millville, N.J. / Millville) played well on the back line as she created four turnovers and picked up a pair of ground balls.
- Despite the score, Kienast played well between the pipes as she had a .538 save percentage with 14 saves on 32 total shots faced.
