Bearcats Overpower Phoenix

(LATROBE, Pa.) – Seven different players registered a point for Wilson, but St. Vincent proved to be too powerful in showdown between the two Sunday. Unlike previous games this season, the Phoenix could not come back after taking a first quarter deficit.

The Basics

Score: Wilson 6, St. Vincent 18

Venue: UPMC Field

Records: Wilson 4-2, St. Vincent 3-1

How It Happened
  • The Bearcats took an early lead with a goal 1:06 into the contest and added to it just over three minutes later. St. Vincent eventually made it 3-0 with 5:13 to go in the first, but Wilson was able to answer after a Bearcats turnover led to a goal by Paige Reynolds (Sr., Keedysville, Md. / Governor Thomas Johnson) on an assist from Sage Lague (So., Fairplay, Md. / Goretti) 19 seconds later.
  • Jill Ahlgren (Jr., Mercersburg, Pa. / Mercersburg) won the ensuing draw control, but Wilson wouldn't maintain possession and St. Vincent was able to translate that into another goal. The Phoenix struck again as Lague found the back of the net on a helper from Marissa Eisenhauer (Jr., Denville, N.J. / Morris Knolls) with 52 seconds left, but the Bearcats got the last word in with a goal 31 seconds later to go up 5-2 after one.
  • St. Vincent turned up its offense in the second quarter. The hosts added two goals before Ahlgren added another for the Phoenix to make the score 7-3. Anna Gibson (Jr., Cecil County, Md. / Perryville) added another with 5:49 left in the half, but the Bearcats added four more in the time elapsed. By halftime St. Vincent led 13-4.
  • The Phoenix were held scoreless in the third before finding some momentum in the early portions of the fourth. Emily Young (So., Fairfax, Va. / Chantilly) was able to score on a feed from Ahlgren while Jordan Hastie (So., Frederick, Md. / Governor Thomas Johnson) followed with a goal of her own on the assist from Reynolds to make the score 16-6.
Inside The Numbers
  • Ahlgren, Reynolds and Lague all had multiple point days with a goal and an assist each. Hastie, Young and Gibson all provided goals while Eisenhauer chipped in an assist.
  • Defensively Ahlgren led the team once again with four caused turnovers. She was able to pick up two ground balls and won six draw controls.
  • Krystal Kienast (Jr., Purcellville, Va. / Loudon Valley) was tested often and made 14 saves on 36 shots faced. Additionally she recovered five ground balls to lead the team.
  • Draw controls were relatively even with the Bearcats holding a narrow 15-13 edge, but ground balls and turnovers hurt the Phoenix as St. Vincent led both categories by double digits.
For The Bearcats
  • Bridget Doyle was a key source of most of the Bearcats offense and finished the game with 15 points on six goals and nine assists.
