Softball Sweeps Final Day of Spring Break

(NORTH MYRTLE BEACH, S.C.) – Wilson closed out its spring break trip in style as it swept the Wednesday slate in games against SUNY Canton and St. Joseph (Conn.). The Phoenix started out by scoring in every inning and making short work of the Kangaroos before powering past the Blue Jays in an evening contest.

The Basics

Scores: Game 1 – Wilson 16, SUNY Canton 2 (5 innings)
Game 2 – Wilson 8, St. Joseph 4

Venue: North Myrtle Beach Parks and Sports Complex

Records: Wilson 4-8, SUNY Canton 0-6, St. Joseph 2-5

How It Happened (Game 1 vs. SUNY Canton)
  • The Phoenix got their offense rolling early as they posted five runs in the first. Makenna Snodgrass (Sr., Flagstaff, Ariz. / Flagstaff) brought in the first of those as she was issued a bases-loaded walk to score Haiden Brookens (Jr., Fayetteville, Pa. / Chambersburg Magnet). Haley Privett (Jr., Fayetteville, Pa. / Chambersburg Magnet) then cleared the bases with a double to left to circle around Alecia Hamilton (Sr., Canton, Ohio / GlenOak), Addyson Stewart (Fy., Felton, Del. / Lake Forest), and Snodgrass. Klarissa Miley (Fy., Spring Run, Pa. / Fannett Metal) added the last run of the frame on a single to right to score Privett before being thrown out at second after the run scored.
  • The runs kept pouring in just one inning later. Madison Briggs (Fy., Lock Haven, Pa. / Central Mountain) led off the frame with a triple to right and was brought in one batter later following an error after Alyssa Wenger (Jr., Chambersburg, Pa. / Chambersburg) singled and proceeded to second. Brookens then made it 7-0 with a single to left to score Wenger. After a double by Hamilton, Stewart laid down a sacrifice bunt to score Brookens from third. Another double, this time by Riley Henry (So., Carlisle, Pa. / Carlisle) made it 9-0 as Hamilton came in. Henry eventually worked her way to home on a pair of wild pitches.
  • The Kangaroos attempted to bounce back in the top of the third. A pair of singles and a sac bunt helped Canton plate the first run before an infield error allowed the designated visitors to add another.
  • Any momentum was short lived as the Phoenix bats stayed hot. A double by Hamilton opened another round of scoring as Wenger came around from second. Brookens then put Wilson back up by 10 after scoring on a wild pitch. Hamilton scored on an infield single by Henry to make it 13-2, and Snodgrass singled to right to clear the bases for another pair of runs. Wenger ended up scoring the final run as well on an error in the fourth.
How It Happened (Game 2 vs. St. Joseph)
  • St. Joseph scored first with a solo run on a pair of hits in the second, but the Phoenix were able to equalize in the bottom of the frame. Henry led off with a double, stole third, and eventually scored on a sac fly by Privett.
  • After a scoreless third, the Blue Jays regained the lead in the fourth, but once again the Phoenix answered. With two outs, Briggs singled in Snodgrass to tie the game at 2-all. Wenger followed with a base hit that scored Miley and Briggs for a 4-2 lead.
  • The Phoenix kept the bats swinging in the fifth as they extended their lead with three more runs. Privett provided the fireworks as she hit a two-out, three run homer.
  • The Blue Jays attempted a comeback with a pair of runs in the top of the sixth, but Wilson escaped further damage as they left two runners on the base paths. Hamilton hit in Wenger to extend the lead back to four to close out the scoring.
Inside The Numbers
  • Paige Dill (Fy., New Oxford, Pa. / New Oxford) received the win in the opener after starting the game and going three innings. Only one of the two runs was earned and she struck out three in the process.
  • A total of 10 different Phoenix recorded hits, eight scored at least one run, and seven recorded at least one RBI.
  • Madison Knerr (Fy., Gettysburg, Pa. / Gettysburg) went the distance to record her first win of the season in the nightcap. She struck out five in the process.
  • Six batters combined for the Phoenix's 10 hits. Hamilton was responsible for three of them in her four at-bats with Snodgrass and Briggs also tallying multiple-hit games.
  • Wenger surpassed a milestone as she recorded her 100th collegiate hit against SUNY Canton.
