Phoenix Walks Off Colonels To Split Day

(NORTH MYRTLE BEACH, S.C.) – The Wilson softball team got back into the win column as it split its pair of games on Tuesday. The Phoenix started the day in exciting fashion as Alyssa Wenger (Jr., Chambersburg, Pa. / Chambersburg) provided late game heroics with a walk-off hit to defeat Curry before Wilson was upended by Stevenson later in the day.

The Basics

Scores: Game 1 – Wilson 9, Curry 8
Game 2 – Wilson 4, Stevenson 14 (5 innings)

Venue: North Myrtle Beach Parks and Sports Complex

Records: Wilson 2-8, Curry 1-2, Stevenson 4-2

How It Happened (Game 1 vs. Curry)
  • Tuesday's opener was back and forth throughout the game. The Colonels started the high-scoring affair with a pair of runs in the second, but Wilson responded in a big way in the bottom of the third. After Addyson Stewart (Fy., Felton, Del. / Lake Forest) led off with a single to left, she eventually came around to score following an infield error. Haiden Brookens (Jr., Fayetteville, Pa. / Chambersburg Magnet) then put the Phoenix up one as her single up the middle brought in Klarissa Miley (Fy., Spring Run, Pa. / Fannett Metal) and Wenger. Three batters later Riley Henry (So., Carlisle, Pa. / Carlisle) made the score 4-2 after she advanced home following another infield error.
  • The Colonels were able to answer in the next half inning as seven hits and an error led to four runs to make the score 6-4. Wilson was able to tie it in the fifth as Makenna Snodgrass (Sr., Flagstaff, Ariz. / Flagstaff) hit in Henry on a single to right and Kaesey Greene (Sr., Taneytown, Md. / Francis Scott Key) brought in Haley Privett (Jr., Fayetteville, Pa. / Chambersburg Magnet) on a sac fly.
  • The sixth inning saw Curry go back in front with a two RBI single to right. The Phoenix were able to get one of the runs back as Henry singled up the middle to score Wenger who led off with a double down the right field line.
  • The final at-bat for the Phoenix provided all of the high-stakes drama. They were immediately put in a good position as Privett led off with a walk, Snodgrass followed with a single to left center, and Greene sent a base hit up the middle to load the bases with no outs. A fielder's choice force out at home and a strikeout quickly changed that leaving Wilson to one final batter. Wenger made it count as she sent a base hit to left field bringing in Snodgrass to tie the game. Head coach Brett Cline sent Greene racing around third and she was able to beat the tag for the winning run.
  • Snodgrass recorded the win as she pitched the final three innings. She allowed two runs on three hits and a walk while striking out four to give her eight in the last five innings pitched. It was her first decision of the season.
How It Happened (Game 2 vs. Stevenson)
  • Wilson looked to keep the momentum going and took an early lead on the Mustangs. Wenger took advantage of an error by Stevenson's center fielder by reaching third and scored on a wild pitch shortly after.
  • Any momentum was short lived, however, as the Mustangs posted 12 runs in the bottom of the frame. Paige Dill (Fy., New Oxford, Pa. / New Oxford) attempted to get the ball rolling again for the Phoenix as she reached first on a error by the catcher and eventually scored on a single by Miley.
  • Stevenson added another pair of runs before Wilson scored again in the fourth as Greene scored on a fielder's choice with the bases loaded. Wilson added its final run in the fifth as Rebecca Green (Fy., Littlestown, Pa. / Littlestown) provided a pinch hit single to score Henry from second.
Inside The Numbers
  • Eight different Phoenix combined to record the 11 hits in the opening game win. Wenger finished 2-for-5 with two RBI and two runs scored. She added to her numbers with another RBI and run scored in the second game.
  • Brookens and Snodgrass also had multiple hit games against Curry while Stewart went 2-for-2 in the second game. Overall Stewart was 3-for-5 on the day.
  • Brookens has now reached safely in four consecutive games.
Up Next
The Phoenix will conclude their spring break trip with another pair of games on Wednesday. They'll take on SUNY Canton to start the day at 11 a.m. before closing with Saint Joseph (Conn.) at 5.
