Softball Drops Two As Spring Break Games Start

(NORTH MYRTLE BEACH, S.C.) – Wilson opened up its spring break trip to the Palmetto State with a pair of games on Saturday, Unfortunately the results weren't what the Phoenix wanted as they fell to Spalding to start the day before falling to UMass-Boston in five innings in the second game.

The Basics

Scores: Wilson 0, Spalding 4
Wilson 1, UMass-Boston 11 (5 innings)

Venue: North Myrtle Beach Parks & Sports Complex

Records: Wilson 1-3, Spalding 0-1, UMass-Boston 2-0

How It Happened (Game 1 vs. Spalding)
  • Both teams played scoreless softball through the first three innings. The Golden Eagles broke through with a pair of runs in the top of the fourth on a Phoenix error and a groundout. Spalding added another pair in the fifth on a sac fly and a base hit.
  • The Phoenix offense was limited thanks to a strong Spalding battery that allowed just one hit and two walks. Haiden Brookens (Jr., Fayetteville, Pa. / Chambersburg Magnet) provided the only Phoenix hit which came in the bottom of the fourth. Alyssa Wenger (Jr., Chambersburg, Pa. / Chambersburg) and Haley Privett (Jr., Fayetteville, Pa. / Chambersburg Magnet) were both issued walks.
How It Happened (Game 2 vs. UMass-Boston)
  • The Beacons got off to a hot start and kept the bats going throughout the game by scoring in every inning. Wilson eventually got on the scoreboard in the top of the third as Kaesey Greene (Sr., Taneytown, Md. / Francis Scott Key) opened up the frame by reaching first after an error by the Beacons' pitcher. Wenger followed up by hitting a double to bring her in. A ground out eventually moved Wenger up to third, but the Phoenix couldn't take advantage as she was left stranded.
  • Brookens and Marina Monsalve (Sr., Corona, Calif. / Centennial) also provided hits for the Phoenix in the first and second innings, respectively.
Up Next
Wilson returns to action with another pair of games tomorrow. The Phoenix will open with Albertus Magnus at 9 a.m. and follow up with Worcester State immediately after at 11.
