Phoenix Powers Over Seahakws

(CHAMBERSBURG, Pa.) – Wilson capped off its five-game home stand with a convincing win over St. Mary's on a chilly Saturday afternoon. The Phoenix bats blasted off 18 hits for the third time this season while scoring 14 runs for the second time this season.

The Basics

Score: Wilson 14, St. Mary's 5

Venue: Henninger Field

Records: Wilson 7-3, St. Mary's 2-5

How It Happened
  • Despite the score, it was St. Mary's who struck first as the Seahawks plated a run in the top of the second. They threatened to score more, but starter Chris Baumann (So., Snow Hilld, Md. / Snow Hill) was able to get out of a jam with a pair of runners stranded.
  • Wilson was able to answer in the bottom of the frame as Jordan McKenzie (Jr., White Plains, Md. / Southern Maryland) put the Phoenix up with a single up the middle to score Vinny Hall (Fy., Fulton, Md. / St. Johns) and Ryan Torres (So., Baltimore, Md. / Archbishop Curley). After St. Mary's tied the game in its next at-bat, the Phoenix went ahead for good in the bottom of the third. Michael Marrale (5th, Sykesville, Md. / Old Dominion) led off with a double to right center and scored one batter later on another double by Gerald Buchanan (Gr., Olney, Md. / Montgomery). Buchanan later scored on a single to left center by Alex Seidleck (So., Crownsville, Md. / Indian Creek).
  • The Phoenix extended their lead in the bottom of the fourth. Marrale started the scoring with a sac fly to score McKenzie. Buchanan later added an RBI single scoring Garrett Griebel (Fy., Kent Island, Md. / Kent Island) before he scored on the next play as Doc Daniels (So., Deal Island, Md. / Crisfield) laced a double.
  • The Seahawks were able to cut the deficit down to three, but the Phoenix opened the flood gates with a seven-spot in the seventh. Consecutive bases-loaded walks to Torres and Hall scored Daniels and Andre before a balk plated Seidleck to make the score 10-4. A wild pitch allowed Torres to score and Hall scored on a single by McKenzie. McKenzie later scored after an infield error and Grieble capped the Phoenix scoring after being hit in by Brady Andre's (Jr., Brookeville, Md. / Sherwood) base knock to left center.
  • St. Mary's was able to get one in the top of the eight, but Ben Looper (Sr., Columbia, Md. / Oakland Hills) was able to work his way out of a jam and Jack Pachella (Fy., Wayne, Pa. / Radnor) closed out the ninth with three strikeouts.
Inside The Numbers
  • Ten different Phoenix combined for their 18 hits with seven of them recording multiple-hit days. McKenzie had the most productive day as he went 3-for-5 with three RBI and two runs scored. Buchanan also had two RBI and two runs scored as well.
  • For McKenzie, it's the third three-hit game of the season.
  • Marrale is now on a six-game hit streak.
  • Baumann was impressive while improving to 2-0 on the season. He struck out nine of the 25 batters faced and allowed two runs, one earned on seven hits and three walks in five innings of work.
  • Overall the Phoenix battery combined to strike out 16 batters on the day.
  • This was the first meeting between the two programs.
