Defense Shines In Wilson's Second Win

(WILKES-BARRE, Pa.) – Wilson overcame another early deficit to pick up another win with a 10-4 defeat of King's on Wednesday afternoon. Emily Young (So., Fairfax, Va. / Chantilly) and Sage Lague (So., Fairplay, Md. / Goretti) both recorded hat tricks while the defense pitched a shutout in the second half to help take the win.

The Basics

Score: Wilson 10, King's 4

Venue: Betzler Athletic Complex

Records: Wilson 2-0, King's 0-3

How It Happened
  • Jill Ahlgren (Jr., Mercersburg, Pa. / Mercersburg) got the Phoenix on the board first just 61 seconds into the game, but the Monarchs responded with the next three goals to take the lead. Wilson was able to close the first on a positive note as Lague scored her first of the day.
  • The defense picked up for both sides in the second as each team found the back of the net just once. King's struck first as Chloe Burke scored her third of the game midway through to make it 4-2. Paige Reynolds (Sr., Keedysville, Md. / Boonsboro) cut the deficit back down to one as she took the feed from Ahlgren with 2:05 before halftime.
  • Wilson's defense shored up in the second half while the Phoenix lit a fuse on the offensive end. Lague scored the equalizer just 1:54 into the third before Young put Wilson in front with a pair of goals, the second of which was assisted by Anna Gibson (Jr., Cecil County, Md. / Perryville).
  • Momentum kept building as the Phoenix got stronger in the fourth with Ahlgren, Lague, Young, and Gibson all finding the back of the net. On the opposite end, defenders Kelly Lepouski (Sr., Millville, N.J. / Millville), Odessa Kalathas (Sr., Chambersburg, Pa. / Chambersburg), Kenna Shearer (Jr., Chambersburg, Pa. / Chambersburg), and Zoe Bemusdaffer (Fy., Frederick, Md. / Walkersville, Md.) along with midfielders Jordan Hastie (So., Frederick, Md. / Governor Thomas Johnson), Lague, Ahlgren, and Young pitched a clean sheet. Together they allowed just seven total shots in the second half. Five of those were on goal, but Krystal Kienast (Jr., Purcellville, Va. / Loudon Valley) made the save on all of them and recorded the win.
Inside The Numbers
  • Wilson outshot King's 21-19 overall in the game. The Monarchs had the upper hand with a 12-9 shot count in the first half, but the Phoenix put the pressure on in the fourth with eight compared to two from King's.
  • In addition to her multiple point performance, Ahlgren caused problems on the defensive side with four caused turnovers and scooped up eight ground balls. She was also strong off the start as she picked up three draw controls.
  • Gibson, Kalathas, Lepouski, and Shearer all had two ground balls on the day.
