(CRESSON, Pa.) – The hot start continues for Wilson women's lacrosse as it defeated Mount Aloysius 8-6 in a rescheduled game on Monday evening. The Phoenix and Mounties were originally scheduled to play Saturday before inclement weather forced a postponement.
As they did in both of their previous games this season, the Phoenix came from behind. The Mounties jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first 7:31 of the game, but the Blue and Black defense locked in the rest of the way while the offense excelled in the second half.
The Basics
Score: Wilson 8, Mount Aloysius 6
Venue: Kelly Field
Records: Wilson 3-0, Mount Aloysius 0-3
How It Happened
- It wasn't until late in the first quarter that Wilson was able to get on the scoreboard. That's when the CSAC Player of the Week Jill Ahlgren (Jr., Mercersburg, Pa. / Mercersburg) took a pass from Paige Reynolds (Sr., Keedysville, Md. / Boonsboro) and found the back of the net with 1:26 left on the clock. From there both teams remained scoreless until the final minutes of the second when Ahlgren found the back of the net again to cut the deficit to one. Mount Aloysius was able to answer and scored with just over a couple of minutes left to put the score 4-2 at halftime.
- Ahlgren and Reynolds connected once again to start the scoring in the third quarter, giving Ahlgren her hat trick and putting the Phoenix back within one. Wilson went on to tie the game at 4-4 when Sage Lague (So., Fairplay, Md. / Goretti) scored midway through the frame. The Mounties added another five minutes later to go back up, but Lague tied the game on a free position goal and assisted Reynolds for the go-ahead goal 35 seconds apart late in the third.
- Anna Gibson (Jr., Cecil County, Md. / Perryville) gave the Phoenix a two-goal cushion early on in the fourth, but the Mounties stayed close and got back within one with 8:55 to go. The Wilson defense stepped up and limited the Mounties to just two shots, only one of which was on target, and forced three turnovers the rest of the way. On the opposite end Ahlgren was able to put Wilson back up by two with another eight-meter shot.
Inside The Numbers
- Wilson outshot Mount Aloysius 33-24 overall and held a 22-16 advantage in shots on goal. CSAC Defensive Player of the Week Krystal Kienast (Jr., Purcellville, Va. / Loudon Valley) came up big between the pipes with 10 stops for a save percentage of .625.
- In addition to her offensive output, Ahlgren caused problems for Mounties all over the field. Not only did she cause three turnovers, but she picked up five ground balls and hit double digits in draw controls with 10. As a result, Wilson held a 13-5 advantage over Mount Aloysius in draw controls.
- Ahlgren wasn't the only one giving the Mounties' attack issues. Gibson and Kenna Shearer (Jr., Chambersburg, Pa. / Chambersburg) both caused three turnovers each while Odessa Kalathas (Sr., Chambersburg, Pa. / Chambersburg) and Zoe Bemusdaffer (Fy., Frederick, Md. / Walkersville) forced two. Gibson also picked up three ground balls on the evening.
