Game Recap: Women's Basketball | | By Logan Smith

Phoenix Hand First Place Gators First CSAC Loss

(CHAMBERSBURG, Pa.) – The Wilson women's basketball team came out firing on all cylinders and kept pushing the pedal to the metal to defeat Notre Dame 75-56 on Wednesday evening. The win, which came on National Girls and Women in Sports Day, was the third-straight for the Phoenix. Not only did it snap a 10-game win streak by the Gators, it also handed them their first CSAC loss this season.

Yaya Cannon (Sr., Lancaster, Pa. / Lancaster Catholic) was nearly unstoppable as she led all scorers with 22 points. She was flanked by Samira Murphy (Sr., Virginia Beach, Va. / Great Bridge Christian) and Adrianna Stricek (Fy., Harrisburg, Pa. / Trinity) who both recorded double-doubles.

The Basics

Score: Wilson 75, Notre Dame 56

Venue: Gannett Field House

Records: Wilson 13-6, 10-3 CSAC; Notre Dame 16-5, 11-1 CSAC

How It Happened
  • The opening two minutes looked like these two conference leaders would stay neck-and-neck as Wilson held a 6-4 lead after the Gators' Alexis Durham scored on a layup. However, the Gators went cold after that while the Phoenix remained hot. A layup paired with an and-one free throw by Madison Ross (Sr., New Oxford, Pa. / New Oxford) followed and started a 16-0 run that put Wilson firmly in control. The Phoenix went 7-for-9 during the stretch run with Cannon chalking up six points while Stricek added five during that time. A Laela Robinson (Fy., Lancaster, Pa. / Conestoga Valley) eventually put Wilson up by 20 before Notre Dame scored in the final minute of the first to make the score 26-8
  • Wilson kept the pressure on in the second and maintained a healthy lead for the duration of the period. Murphy started to head up Gannett Field House as she scored eight points in the frame after she went 3-for-4 and added a pair of free throws. She assisted two more buckets and made a pair of steals as well. As a result, her efforts helped the Phoenix take a 44-27 lead into the locker room at the half.
  • The Phoenix kept the momentum up in the third and started the half with an 11-2 run. Scoring was by committee as the Phoenix received contributions from Stricek, Cannon, Robinson and Murphy to go up 55-29, their largest lead of the game. The Gators were eventually able to cut that deficit down thanks to an 8-0 run later in the frame, but couldn't get closer than 15 the rest of the way.
Inside The Numbers
  • Cannon totaled her season-high 22 after she went 10-for-13 from the floor. She also set up her teammates well as she dished out six assists as well.
  • Murphy followed with 16 points and recorded her fourth double-double with 11 rebounds on the night. She too was eyes-wide-open and threatened a triple-double with seven assists. Defensively she led the team with three steals as well.
  • Speaking of double-doubles, Stricek now has 10 for the season after she scored 14 points with 15 caroms.
  • In their previous meeting at the end of November, Notre Dame's Kori People led all scorers with 24 points with six 3-pointers. Tonight she was limited to 12 and was 0-for-2 from range.
  • Rebounding was even with 41 a piece, but Wilson controlled the inside and outscored the Gators 44-24 in the paint.
  • The Phoenix made excellent use of Gator miscues as 21 turnovers led to 21 points, while Notre Dame managed 12 on 16 from Wilson.
  • The win is the first for the Phoenix in six meetings with the Gators.
Up Next
