(CHAMBERSBURG, Pa.) – Darryl Garib (Sr., Dallas, Texas / Forest Park) dropped a career-high 44 points to set a new single game program record as Wilson battled Keystone on Saturday afternoon. Unfortunately for the Phoenix it was the Giants who prevailed in the first meeting between the two since they battled for the conference championship after scoring with less than a second to go in one of the most exciting contests ever at Gannett Memorial Field House.
The Basics
Score: Wilson 85, Keystone 86
Venue: Gannett Memorial Field House
Records: Wilson 3-4, 1-1 Skye; Keystone 1-6, 1-1 Skye
How It Happened
- Keystone set the tone early and played nearly perfect basketball through the early moments of the game as it built a 22-10 lead. The Giants shot 11-of-12 from the field to take the advantage, and the one shot they missed was followed by an offensive rebound and putback. The Phoenix played were hot in their own right and always stayed within striking distance as that was Keystone's largest lead of the game. Gary Robertson (Sr., Washington D.C. / Potomac) was able to follow up with a 3-pointer, and after Wilson forced a turnover, Robertson hit a mid-range jumper in the paint to cut the deficit back to seven.
- The Blue and White eventually got back within a possession on a couple of occasions, both on a pair of Garib buckets underneath late in the half. The latter made the score 30-27 with 4:08 left before the Giants pushed their lead back up to eight before the half.
- Each time the Phoenix tried to but a dent in the Giants lead, Keystone seemingly had an answer. After a Garib layup made it 44-37, Jack Anderson came back and answered with a 3-pointer on the return trip to put the visitors back up by double digits. Another triple, this time by Tyair Sanders, put Keystone's lead back at 10 with 5:48 to go in regulation before the Phoenix made an impressive charge down the stretch.
- Wilson found itself down eight after Keystone converted an old-school three-point play with 1:40 to go, but Garib answered with another layup and Robertson added another trey after a pair of missed Giants free throws to make the score 84-81 38 seconds later.
- The run continued as Bryce Smith (Jr., Bryan, Texas / A&M Consolidated) stole the ball away from Anderson and assisted on a Garib lay-in to get within one. Tyrik Ward-Hoyte (Jr., Baltimore, Md. / Phelps) caused another turnover with a steal which led to Ethan Wilson (Jr., Manassas, Va. / Osbourn Park) getting fouled with 22 seconds remaining. He was able to convert both free throws and gave the Phoenix their only lead of the game.
- With the seconds ticking down, Keystone had a few cracks at the last shot. Attempts by Anderson and Brandon Scott were both off, but Scott was able to pull down the last rebound and get the put-back on a foul with 0.5 remaining. After a lane violation, Wilson was left with one last opportunity, but the long range inbounds pass was tipped away.
For The Record
- Garib had an incredible night as he finished with a new career-high of 44 points. He was 18-of-28 from the field. Both points and made field goals set new single game program records. Keion Adams had the previous points mark with 39 after he went 13-for-20 overall and 6-for-12 on 3-pointers for 39 points against Gallaudet on February 18, 2017.
- The previous record for most field goals in a single game was 15 set initially by Marqwon Wynn who against Morrisville State on January 22, 2016. It was matched by Antonio Bussey against Bridgewater on November 28, 2021.
Inside The Numbers
- Wilson had its second-best shooting night from the field with a 49.2% clip after it made 32-of-65. Unfortunately, Keystone was on target and shot 60.0% (36-60), just the second time they have done so in the last 11 seasons.
- Not to be lost in Garib's offensive production was his work on the glass. He pulled down 13 rebounds for his second consecutive double double. Nine caroms were on the offensive end which led to 13 second-chance points.
- Joining Garib in double-figures were Robertson and Wilson. Robertson finished .500 from the field after he went 7-of-14 overall and 4-for-6 behind the arc for a season-best 20 points. Wilson added 11 points with three 3-pointers.
- Both Robertson and Wilson were strong all over the court. Robertson dished out a team-high seven assists and made three steals, while Wilson pulled down seven boards and tallied six helpers.
- The Giants were led by a trio in double figures. Scott paced Keystone with 31 points and was 14-of-19 overall. Anderson added 18 after he was .500 from the field, and D'Andre Sutherland scored 10.
