(PHOENIXVILLE, Pa.) – Darryl Garib (Dallas, Texas / Forest Park) scored a game-high 25 points in leading Wilson to an overtime victory at Valley Forge on Monday evening. In doing so the senior forward joined the 1,000-point with his first bucket to become just the third Phoenix in program history to achieve the honor.
The Basics
Score: Wilson 72, Valley Forge 70 (OT)
Venue: Patriots Gymnasium
Records: Wilson 4-4, 2-1 Skye; Valley Forge 1-9, 1-3 Skye
How It Happened
- The milestone came early for Garib as he took a pass from Ethan Wilson (Jr., Manassas, Va. / Osbourn Park / Howard C.C.) and was able to drive the left baseline for a layup to make the score 5-2 in favor of the Phoenix 1:24 into the contest. The Patriots answered with a pair of 3-pointers to take the lead. From there, both teams went blow-for-blow with five additional ties and lead changes. While Valley Forge was able to keep Garib in check with just two additional points before the half, Bryce Smith (Jr., Bryan, Texas / A&M Consolidated / Medaille) was able to open up the offense with four 3-pointers. At the break, the Phoenix led 31-28.
- Garib started to go to work at the start of the second half. He alone went on a 6-0 run to start the frame as Wilson pushed the lead to 37-28 just over three minutes in for the largest lead of the game. UVF slowly started to chip away at the deficit and used the long ball to help them do it. Twice 3-pointers put them within a possession and a third gave the hosts the lead at 53-51 with 7:39 left in regulation.
- Wilson was able to keep the Patriots in check and didn't let them get too far ahead. They were able to get up by four after a Jeremiah Daye jumper shortly afterwards, but layups by Garib and Darren Green (Jr., Silver Spring, Md. / Springbrook) eventually tied the game at 57-all with 4:06 to go in the second. Both teams had the lead in the final minute before Garib tied the game with a free throw with 14 seconds left. The Patriots had a chance to win with the last shot, but a 3-point attempt was short at the buzzer.
- The Phoenix never trailed in the extra frame, but didn't have much breathing room as the Patriots stayed at arm's length. An Ethan Wilson jumper put the Phoenix up five for its largest overtime lead with 19 seconds left. Valley Forge answered with another Daye trey and forced a turnover on the inbounds, but similar to the end of regulation, a last second 3-point attempt was short to give Wilson the win.
For The Record
- Garib becomes just the third player in program history to reach the 1,000-point plateau. He joins Keion Adams who totaled a program-best 1,618 points from 2015 to 2019, and Rashaan Bean who is second all-time with 1,614 scored between 2016 and 2020.
Inside The Numbers
- Twenty of Garib's 25 points came in the second half alone. Overall he was 10-for-21 from the field, but in the second he was nearly unstoppable as he sank 8-of-12 from the floor.
- Not to be lost in the shuffle was a double double effort by Gary Robertson (Sr., Washington D.C. / Potomac / Bryand & Stratton). While most of his double doubles have come on points and assists, tonight was different as he led all players with 10 rebounds. Points-wise he dropped in 11 after he went 4-for-7 with a pair of triples.
- Smith finished with 12 points, all of which came in the first half. Ethan Wilson rounded out a quartet of double figure scorers with 13 points.
- Overall Wilson had one off its better nights shooting from the field and made 53.1% (26-of-49) on the night.
For The Patriots
- Daye proved difficult to stop as he led the hosts with 21 points and seven rebounds. Keyshawn Kennedy added 17 points. Goodine and Ty Bates completed the double figure scorers for Valley Forge with 13 and 11, respectively.
