Second Quarter Explosion Ignites Phoenix In Win

(BRYN MAWR, Pa.) – Five players scored in double figures and Adrianna Stricek (So., Harrisburg, Pa. / Trinity) recorded her third double-double as Wilson soundly defeated Rosemont for its first victory of the season. After a tightly contested first quarter, the Phoenix dominated frames two and three, and outscored the Ravens 49-12 to take control of the game and never looked back.

The Basics

Score: Wilson 80, Rosemont 49

Venue: Alumnae Hall

Records: Wilson 1-4, 1-0 Skye; Rosemont 1-6, 0-1 Skye

How It Happened
  • The 3-point shot came in handy for the Phoenix in the opening period as they used it to stay within striking distance of the Ravens after they jumped out to a seven point lead in the early moments. The first bonus bomb came from Jewels Torres (So., York, Pa. / West York) as she sparked a 7-0 run to tie the game at 11-all. Another by Yaya Cannon (Gr., Lancaster, Pa. / Lancaster Catholic) then gave the Blue and White their first lead of the game at 14-13 with 2:53 left in the quarter. Rosemont was able to answer with eight of the next 10 points and hit its own triple with 26 seconds on the clock, but Mackenzie Caldwell-Degnon (FY, Rockville, Md. / Richard Montgomery) gave Wilson the momentum shift with a 3-pointer just before the horn sounded.
  • Caldwell-Degnon's trey sparked a massive 21-0 run that stayed lit until the 3:26 mark of the second quarter when the Ravens eventually scored on a fastbreak layup. Wilson was able to return the favor as Caldwell-Degnon took a dish from Hanna Brownlee (FY, Avella, Pa. / Avella) for a fastbreak layup of her own. Laela Robinson (So., Lancaster, Pa. / Conestoga Valley) later added a fourth 3-pointer for the Phoenix to help them take a 46-28 lead into the locker room at the half.
  • Wilson kept the pedal to the metal in the third quarter. A quick layup by Lae Black (So., Laurel, Md. / Meade) put the Phoenix up 20 just four seconds in, and Wilson was able to push that advantage up to 30 after a pair of Stricek free throws by the time there was 4:30 remaining in the third. At nearly the same point of the fourth quarter, Torres scored Wilson's final 3-pointer on a Brownlee assist to give Wilson a 39-point lead, its largest of the game.
Inside The Numbers
  • In the first quarter, Rosemont shot 66.7% (8-of-12) compared to Wilson's 31.6% (7-of-22). However the second quarter was a polar opposite with the Phoenix shooting 68.8% (11-of-18) while the Ravens shot 14.3% (2-of-14).
  • The second quarter was the best Wilson has shot in a single frame all season, while defensively it was the second-best period in terms of shooting percentage for the Phoenix. The only frame they did better defensively came in the third as they limited the Ravens to 2-of-17 from the field.
  • Wilson was led by Stricek and Caldwell-Degnon with 15 points each. Stricek accumulated a double-double with a game-high 12 rebounds.
  • Cannon and Torres added 12 points each. Both were 2-of-3 behind the arc. Cannon added game-high honors with five assists and three steals to her stat line as well.
  • Black joined the quintet of double figure Phoenix scorers with 10 points after she went 5-for-7 from the field.
  • Rosemont was led by Mojisola Shokeye with 22 points. The bulk of her damage was done in the first quarter where she scored 15 points. She was 5-of-6 from the field with a pair of three pointers, but after defensive adjustments was just 2-for-11 the rest of the way.
  • Turnovers helped the Phoenix as 25 Ravens miscues led to 21 points for the Blue and White. Conversely Rosemont was only able to add nine after a season-low 11 turnovers by Wilson.
Up Next
The Phoenix will look to make it two-in-a-row as they host Keystone in the backend of a men's and women's doubleheader on Saturday. Tip-off with the Giants is slated for approximately 3 p.m. following the conclusion of the men's game.
