(CHAMBERSBURG, Pa.) – Darryl Garib (Sr., Dallas, Texas / Forest Park) put down a game-high 20 points, but it wasn't enough as Wilson fell to Lycoming in its home opener on Sunday afternoon. The two teams battled it out and were tied with just under six minutes to go, but the Warriors outscored the Phoenix 12-3 down the stretch to take the win.
The Basics
Score: Wilson 63, Lycoming 72
Venue: Gannett Field House
Records: Wilson 2-3, Lycoming 3-2
How It Happened
- The Phoenix came out of the gates quick with three 3-pointers – two from Bryce Smith (Jr., Bryan, Texas / A&M Consolidated / Medaille) and another from Gary Robertson (Sr., Washington D.C. / Potomac) – to take the early lead on the Warriors. Layups from Garib and Ibraheem Bundu (Sr., Bowie, Md. / Largo / CCBC Dundalk) followed to force the visitors to take an early timeout with Wilson up 13-7 just 4:38 into the game. The strategy proved fruitful for the Warriors as they were able to climb back into the contest and go on a 19-5 run to take an eight point lead over the next 10 minutes.
- Wilson was able to answer with an 10-0 run capped by a Jordan Miles (Gr., Waldorf, Md. / Westlake) triple to regain the lead. Lycoming eventually bounced back to take a 34-31 lead after a trey from Brendon Blackson with 1:29 left in the half, but the Phoenix closed the frame on layups from Garib and Tykrik Ward-Hoyte (Jr., Baltimore, Md. / Phelps) to head to the locker rooms up 35-34.
- The Warriors used a 13-0 run near the start of the second half to take a 49-39 lead with 13:40 to go in the game, but Wilson didn't go away quietly. A Garib trey helped spark the offense back into rhythm, and the senior eventually added three more buckets in the paint to help the Blue and White tie the game at 53-all with 8:49 to go.
- A Jared Perry (Gr., Woodbridge, Va. / St. John Paul The Great / Marymount) eventually gave the lead back to Wilson shortly after, but a J.T. Kirbie 3-pointer placed the advantage back in favor of the Warriors the next trip down the floor. Jumpers from Ward-Hoyte and Robertson eventually allowed to tie the game at 60-all with 5:54 to go in the game.
- Unfortunately, the last six minutes of the game belonged to the Warriors as they closed the game on a 12-3 run. Two of their next three field goals were from range as they quickly went up eight. They also were able to keep Wilson off the scoreboard until 21 seconds left in which the game was decided by that time.
Inside The Numbers
- Garib hit the 20-point plateau for the third time this season. He also led the Phoenix with six rebounds. He's averaging 18.2 points per game, currently fourth in the United East Skye Division.
- Ward-Hoyte joined Garib in double-figures with 14 points. He was nearly perfect from the field as he was 6-for-7, easily his best game thus far this season. He added four rebounds and two steals.
- Both teams shot approximately the same, but Lycoming controlled the glass with a 40-25 edge on rebounds. A dozen of them were on the offensive end for the Warriors which led to a 13-4 advantage in second chance points.
- Lycoming was led by Isaiah Valentine with 15 points. He was one of four Warriors who scored in double-figures.
