Game Recap: Women's Basketball | | By Logan Smith

Phoenix Fall To Salisbury

(CHAMBERSBURG, Pa.) – Three players scored in double figures and Adrianna Stricek (So., Harrisburg, Pa. / Trinity) recorded a double-double, but it wasn't enough as Wilson fell to visiting Salisbury on Tuesday evening. The Phoenix couldn't overcome the Sea Gulls' counterpunch of Nicole Miller and Abby Plaugher who both tallied 20 on the night.

The Basics

Score: Wilson 54, Salisbury 82

Venue: Gannett Memorial Field House

Records: Wilson 0-4, Salisbury 3-4

How It Happened
  • The start of the game featured some back-and-forth action as Wilson joined Salisbury to a fast start out of the gate. After the Sea Gulls opened the scoring, the Phoenix answered with a 3-pointer by Allie Cullison (Jr., Westminster, Md. / Winters Mill). Near the midway point of the frame, another Cullison bucket on a dish from Jewels Torres (So., York, Pa. / West York) tied the game at 10-all. Unfortunately from there the Sea Gulls still kept steam and closed the quarter on a 10-3 run.
  • A pair of Torres free throws and a jumper from Mackenzie Caldwell-Degnon (FY, Rockville, Md. / Richard Montgomery) helped the Phoenix climb back into contention at the start of the second. That helped Wilson get back within three before back-to-back buckets provided more breathing for the Sea Gulls. That ended up sparking a 16-0 run before Lae Black (So., Laurel, Md. / Meade) put the Phoenix back on the board 3:05 before the half. Headed to the locker room Salisbury held a 40-25 lead.
  • Wilson started to chip away at the deficit in hopes of mounting a comeback in the third quarter. Down 23, the Blue and White went on a 13-3 run capped by a Caldwll-Degnon layup to make the score 54-41 late in the third. Unfortunately it was the closed Wilson could get as the Sea Gulls pushed the lead back out to 19 at 61-52 headed to the fourth. Salisbury remained in control for the rest of the game.
Inside The Numbers
  • Stricek finished the evening with 11 points and a season-best 14 rebounds. It was her second double-double of the season after she totaled 18 and 16 at Mount Aloysius
  • Yaya Cannon (Gr., Lancaster, Pa. / Lancaster Catholic) and Torres added 12 and 10 points, respectively. Most of the damage came from the Free throw line where Cannon was 6-of-7 and Torres was 8-of-10.
  • It was difficult for the Phoenix to get any penetration in the paint as Salisbury controlled the area quite well from start to finish. The Sea Gulls' height allowed them to control a 50-38 rebounding advantage and outscore the Phoenix 48-22 in points in the paint.
Up Next
United East Skye Division is up next for the Phoenix. They'll head to Bryn Mawr to take on Rosemont a week from today. Tip-off is set for 6 p.m.
