Cannon, Caldwell-Degnon Score Dozen In Home Opener

(CHAMBERSBURG, Pa.) – Yaya Cannon (Gr., Lancaster, Pa. / Lancaster Catholic) and Mackenzie Caldwell-Degnon (FY, Rockville, Md. / Richard Montgomery) both scored in double figures as Wilson was defeated by visiting Bridgewater in the home opener on Saturday. The Eagles were able to jump out to an early lead, but the Phoenix were able to make some adjustments in the second half where they were only outscored by one point.

The Basics

Score: Wilson 45, Bridgewater 80

Venue: Gannett Memorial Field House

Records: Wilson 0-3, Bridgewater 3-2

How It Happened
  • A Cannon layup provided the first points for the Phoenix and made the score 6-2 early in the first, but the Eagles defense clamped down and didn't allow another field goal until midway through the second half when Adrianna Stricek (So., Harrisburg, Pa. / Trinity) made an old-fashioned 3-point play after she was fouled on a jumper in the paint. Momentum remained with Bridgewater as it went into halftime up 42-8.
  • The Phoenix came out with much better pace in the second half, nearly going point-for-point with the Eagles. Allie Cullison (Jr., Westminster, Md. / Winters Mill) gave the offense a boost as she started off the third quarter with a layup. Later in the frame, a triple by Caldwell-Degnon and three free throws by Lae Black (So., Laurel, Md. / Meade) put Wilson on a 6-0 run, its largest of the game.
  • Caldwell-Degnon remained strong in the final frame as she went a perfect 4-for-4 from the field. Cannon added four points to give her nine in the half, but the Eagles were too strong and too far ahead as the clock hit zeros.
Inside The Numbers
  • The dozen points were season-bests for both Cannon and Caldwell-Degnon.
  • Stricek nearly had double figures in rebounds as she finished the game with nine for game-high honors.
  • The fourth quarter played by Wilson was the best thus far this season. The Phoenix finished with 20 points and shot a season-best 60% (6-of-10) from the field.
  • Bridgewater was led by Jaden Alsberry who led all players with 20 points. She was nearly perfect on the day as she made 10-of-11. She also led the Eagles with six rebounds.
Up Next
The Phoenix will have one more game before Thanksgiving break as they host Salisbury on Tuesday. Tip-off with the Sea Gulls is set for 6 p.m.
