Phoenix Take First Set, But Fall To Ravens

(BRYN MAWR, Pa.) – Wilson was able to take the opening set against host Rosemont, but couldn't take advantage and fell to the Ravens in four sets on Tuesday evening. The Phoenix received a 13-kill effort from Deah Menedis (Jr., Reisterstown, Md. / Franklin), but were overpowered by a Rosemont trio in double figures.

The Basics

Scores: Wilson 1, Rosemont 3 (23-25, 25-19, 25-13, 25-18)

Venue: Alumnae Hall

Records: Wilson 1-21, 1-4 Skye; Rosemont 3-11, 3-2 Skye

How It Happened
  • The Phoenix got off to one their finer starts of the season and opened the contest with the first four points. Niki Schussler (Jr., Chambersburg, Pa. / Cumberland Valley Christian) started the night with a kill followed by two more from Menedis. Rosemont was able to eventually take the lead midway through the game, and after exchanging leads five times, took a 21-19 lead in attempts to take the first set. Wilson remained composed and quickly tied the frame with a Ravens error and a Menedis kill. After a Phoenix error put Rosemont back in front, Wilson rebounded and used a Schussler kill and a pair of Rosemont miscues to take a 24-22 lead. The Ravens scored the next point, but a service error followed to give the Blue and White a 1-0 lead.
  • Rosemont had the advantage early in the second, but a 5-0 run with an Addie Hebert (FY, Gettysburg, Pa. / Gettysburg) ace, an Allyson Garcelon (So., Shrewsbury, Pa. / Susquehannock) kill, and another Menedis kill put Wilson in front 6-5. Rosemont jumped back in front immediately after, and although the Phoenix stayed within one for the next few points, the Ravens started to pull away and eventually evened things up at one set each.
  • Wilson scored the opening two points of set two on an Abby Moreland (FY, Sabillasville, Md. / Catoctin) kill and a bad set by Rosemont, but the Ravens answered with the next seven points. They quickly extended the lead and held on to take a 2-1 advantaged to the fourth.
  • Both teams were pretty even through the first 14 points after a Menedis swing tied things up at 7-all. However Rosemont was able to regain control with a 7-0 run and eventually pushed its lead to 17-8. Wilson was able to cut the deficit to five after a Moreland kill made it 19-14, but the Phoenix couldn't get any closer as the Ravens took the match.
Inside The Numbers
  • Menedis finished with a match-high 13 kills to lead the Phoenix attack. It was her sixth match this season in double figures and fifth time in the last seven outings.
  • Michaela Windisch (FY, Westminster, Md. / Catoctin) set up the offense with 27 assists. It's her fourth consecutive contest with at least 25 assists.
  • Hebert led the back line with 18 digs. She's reached double figures defensively in all but three matches this season.
  • Moreland joined Hebert in double figures with 14 digs to put her past 200 for the season.
