(CHAMBERSBURG, Pa.) – A tough task awaited the Wilson women's volleyball team as it hosted defending conference champion Cedar Crest on Saturday afternoon. While the Phoenix gave the Falcons all they could handle in the third set, the Skye Division leaders were to strong earlier in the match and went home with the victory.
The Basics
Scores: Wilson 3, Cedar Crest 0 (25-14, 25-13, 25-20)
Venue: Gannett Field House
Records: Wilson 1-20, 1-3 Skye; Cedar Crest 9-8, 4-0 Skye
- The Falcons showed why they're the lone unbeaten team in the division as they jumped out to a 13-3 lead and scored the opening five points. Wilson did have a solid stretch midway through the game with a couple of Abby Moreland (FY, Sabillasvilla, Md. / Catoctin) kills along with an ace from the talented first year player to make the score 17-11, but the early deficit was too much to overcome for the Phoenix.
- The Phoenix fareda little better at the start of the second. After Cedar Crest opened with the first three points, Maddie Watson (So., Lancaster, Pa. / Lancaster Mennonite) and Deah Menedis (Jr., Reisterstown, Md. / Franklin) recorded points to help Wilson stay within one at 6-5. The Falcons eventually pulled way and scored seven of the last eight points for the 2-0 lead.
- Kills from Watson, a bad set, and swing by Niki Schussler (Jr., Chambersburg, Pa. / Cumberland Valley Christian) helped Wilson tie the Falcons before a couple of Schussler strings as well as an Allson Garcelon (So., Shrewsbury, Pa. / Susquehannock) put the hosts up 6-3 at the start of the third. Swings by Garcelon and Menedis continued to keep Wilson up at 9-8. Unfortunately the Falcons caught fire and went on an 8-0 to take control of the set. Wilson was able to get back within four, but the deficit was too much to overcome as the Falcons took the sweep.
Inside The Numbers
- Moreland was held to single digits, but not by much as she led the team with nine on 29 attempts. Only the Falcons' Maddison Minyo had more with 10.
- Schussler had a strong match with seven kills on 23 attempts.
- Michaela Windisch (FY, Westminster, Md. / Catoctin) set up the attack with 25 assists.
- Addie Hebert (FY, Gettysburg, Pa. / Gettysburg) led the back line defensively, but like Moreland, she too was held to single digits with nine.
